Job Research Guidelines

Industry:

There are some specific questions to find out about an industry you are
interested in:

– What are the general trends in the industry?

– Where are the growth areas in that industry?

– What skills are in demand?

– What is the demographic profile of the workforce?

– Is the industry prone to outsourcing or offshoring?

You can find answers to these questions from:

– Trade associations, finance websites, local chamber of commerce,

industry newsletters

Company:

Only after that is the time to drill down and do company research

• Find a national directory of companies in the selected industry. Use Google

for this

• Shortlist companies basis reputation, brand value, location, size of company

and any other parameter that are important to you

• Trawl through financial news and financial services websites that cover
industry and companies. Make lots of note. Look at key financial metrics and if
you are not good at them ask a friend in finance to help you out.

• Only after that comes the time to visit the company’s website

– Study their annual reports

– Products section

– Industry analysis

Here are questions to ask about a company under consideration and you must have
answers to each of them:

– Is the company in a fast growth mode or plateauing or worse de-

growing? How will that affect their hiring outlook?

– What are the external factors affecting this company?

– Who are its main competitors?

– What is the turnover in its senior management?

– Analyze its balance sheet and determine its financial health

– Get external analyst views on the company – this is often available on

the web

– What is its market share and growth rate?

– What has been its history of new product launches?

– Does the company have an overseas market?

– Is the company ethical? Does it have any pending or past lawsuits?

– What do past and current employees say about the company?

– Who are the hiring managers?
