I. INTRODUCTION

English has always been one of the official languages of the Philippines. It is
the language of commerce and law, as well as the primary medium of instruction
in some learning areas such as Math and Science. English is said to be the
international language which is being mastered by some so they may
communicate and understand others from around the globe. Hence, improving
the teaching and learning process, developing it as a vital skill of the workforce is
being closely monitored by the Department of Education. Enhancing the reading
and comprehension skills of Filipino learners through the different programs is
the major key to eradicate nonreaders and heighten the proficiency level in
English language.
The English Department of Lasip NHS is doing its best to enhance the English
proficiency level of its learners by implementing the programs being mandated by
the Department Education and doing the necessary actions to improve students’
performances in English and in other core subjects.

II. ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN

Phil-IRI Group Screening Test, Pretest and Posttest

 The English teachers with the guidance of Ma’am Zenaida F.
Peralta, Head Teacher III of the Communication Arts Department,
monitored the reading and comprehension skills of the learners
following the stages given in the Phil-IRI Manual. Analysis of the
said tests helped the teachers plan for the conduct of remedial
classes to every struggling readers and nonreaders.

PROJECT HEART (HOLLISTICALLY, ENGAGING ACTIVITIES FOR

READING TIME)
 This reading intervention program was conducted to cater the
needs of the struggling readers and nonreaders. It aims to

develop not only the learners’ ability but also their emotional and
social abilities. Learners who are under this program will be called
by their Reading teacher for their reading session one hour per
day. Necessary interventions such as mastering phonetics,
providing high interest stories and using multisensory
instruction will hold children’s attention and develop their
proficiency in reading.

English Olympics 2019

 This program was celebrated last December 6, 2019. It brought
opportunities to the learners to showcase their skills and talents.
Quiz Bee, Spelling Bee, and Festival of Talents were among the
activities happily participated by the learners.

ELECTION OF ENGLISH CLUB OFFICERS

 The election of the English club officers was spearheaded by
Ma’am Josephine B. Rodriguez, English Coordinator, last June
2019. The abovementioned activity aimed to hone not only the
leadership skills of the learners but also their social skills. The
elected officers would help their English teachers plan and prepare
for the activities being conducted annually by the Communication
Arts Department.
