3.1 General safety instructions

x Lifting accessories must be designed to handle the load.
x Lifting accessories should be stored in an area where they will not be subjected to mechanical
damage, corrosive action, moisture, extreme heat, or kinking.
x Visually check that the lifting hook or shackle/pin is free of fracture or deformation.
x Visually check eyebolts (if used) for cracks, deformations or damaged threads.
x Sling hooks must consist of self-locking hooks or sling hooks equipped with a sufficiently strong
safety latch.
x Use hooks with rounded edges and an inner radius not less than the webbing width to avoid
damage to the sling.
x Slings must not be shortened or lengthened by knotting.
x Unshouldered eyebolts can be used for vertical lifts only.
x The weight and the center of gravity of the lifted load must be known.
x The distance between the points of attachment must be big enough to ensure a secure load balance
during lifting.
x Never lift or move the load over personnel or leave the load unnecessarily suspended.
x Protect slings from any sharp load edges.
x A preliminary lift should be carried out. Once the load is raised free of its base, stop the lift and
check the load balance and fastenings.
x Avoid jolting during load.
x Never pull a sling from beneath the load if the load is resting on the sling.
