How to teach English without teaching English?

In the last decades, speaking English has become more important than before. Since this

language as lingua franca it is important in a globalized world and it is time that teachers

change traditional teaching methods and start reinvent the way this language is taught. An

example is Mr. Roberto Guzman who is an English teacher in Puerto Rico that employs a

particular method which is called teaching English without teaching English.

With this, he does not refers to not to teach English to their students but to change the

perception students have about English learning by leaving aside the grammar and

implementing more speaking activities to get them involved in participating during the

classes. Surprisingly this method works very well because it helps to increase students’

critical thinking. Like this method, there are a huge amount of innovative ways that teacher

around the world are implementing in their classes.

In my opinion, more teachers should be aware of their students’ needs when learning

English since this a better way the students keep motivated and working autonomously.

Fact that has been gaining land in the field of language teaching/learning as various studies

show it.

To conclude, teachers as students have to evolve with as the time passes because teaching

methods and needs change constantly and it is worth to remark the phrase by George

Bernard Shaw “Progress is impossible without change and those who cannot change their

mind cannot change anything”
