Learning Over Load

Fueling fears of complying loaded activities in the self-learning modules

overwhelmed thousands of students of Laguna Senior High School as they are still
adjusting on the new education system. A reasonable number of workloads are what
the students are voicing out so they can still engage with the enjoyment of learning
without any feeling of burdensome.
International studies have found that 56 percent of students considered
overloaded school work a primary source of stress while 33 percent put the pressure to
get good grades. Drawing a line between developing learning skills and feeling
frustration has been getting thinner that it can hoax students to feel unmotivated.

In line with this, Kelly Cipriano from ABM 12- Tan was among the scores of
students who have experienced mental breakdowns due to workload pile-up and slow-
paced accomplishment of requirements. “It's not that I am complaining. It's just that if all
subjects give six to eight activities for a week, we can't submit all of those on the given
deadline because we have so many subjects,” she lamented.

On the other hand, Cipriano expressed her gratefulness to considerate teachers.

Mr. Jowel Palacol—UCSP teacher—assigned an average of five to six activities weekly
based on the objectives of learning competency. He shared the struggles of
consolidating activities through different means of submission and checking a lot of
outputs.

Likewise, large number of requirements robbed the chance of the students to

refresh their minds and bodies because accomplishing all assigned tasks lessen their
social time to spend with their families and friends. Without a support system and a time
to socialize, this can leave them feeling isolated that can trigger their stress.

In most cases, students were expected to learn and comprehend within a day
lessons usually taught in school for a week. Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio
defended that some activities in self-learning modules is also up to the school heads
and teachers to decide which activities will be a reasonable requirement to avoid
students suffering burnout.

In these trying times, the struggle of pandemic is enough and adding an

overloaded school works will be too much to handle. Let the previous curriculum
requirements and workloads be the lesser basis in this more challenging academic
year. It is better to emphasize learning over load.
