II. READING SKILLS

Translate the passages below. You can choose 3 of 4 passages.

1. HANDLING YOUR EMOTIONS

Everybody has emotions, they are the feelings you have. They help you to get the most out
of life and to face emergencies when they arise. You get emotional satisfaction out of
many things that you enjoy reading, playing, team games, being with other people, and
gaining success at something.
Feelings of pleasure are not, however, the only feelings you have. You also have feelings of
sorrow, fear, disappointment, and anger. These feelings are part of life. It is important to
learn how to handle them when they occur. Unless you do, they get in your way. They
may prevent you from doing what you want to do, they may give other people an
unpleasant impression of you. They may also affect your physical health.

2. SLEEP
After a hectic day of work and play, the body needs to rest. Sleep is necessary for
good health. During this time, tke body recovers from the previous day. The rest that you
get while sleeping anables your body to prepare itself for the next day.
There are four levels of sleep, each being a little deeper than the one before. As you
sleep, your muscles relax little by little. Your heart beats more slowly, and your brain
slows down accordingly. After you reach the fourth level, your body shifts back and forth
from one level of to the other.

3. TRUE LOVE
My name is Joe. That is why my colleague, Milton Davidson, calls me. He is a
programmer and I am a computer. I am part of the Multivac Complex and am connected
with other parts all over the world. I know everything. Almost everything.
I am Milton’s private computer. His Joe. He understands more about computers than
anyone in the world, and I am his experimental model. He has made me speak better than
any other computer can.

4. THE BLACK STONE OF KAABA.

Before the advent of Prophet Muhammad the Black Stone was again lost and great
confusion swept over the people. When it was found it became the subject of great conflict
between the tribes.
The problem was to which tribe the black stone belonged and who was responsible for
replacement in its proper place. A solution was finally decided between the tribes. The
person who entered the holy place at dawn on a certain day would be the final judge of
the fate of the Black Stone. The decision was not made public to the people. It happened
that Muhammad himself before he achieved his prophethood, entered the sacred shrine
first.
