ESSAY

Which facilities should receive money?

Your class has attended a panel discussion on facilities which should receive money from local authorities. You
have made the notes below:

Which facilities should receive money from local authorities?

- Museums
- sports centres
- public gardens

Some opinions expressed in the discussion:

- “Museums aren’t popular with everybody!”
- “Sports centres mean healthier people.”
- “A town needs green spaces – parks are great for everybody.”

Write an essay discussing two of the facilities in your notes. You should explain which facility it is more
important for local authorities to give money to, giving reasons in support of your answer.

You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the discussion, but you should use your own words
as far as possible.

In this day an age most relevant cities around the world are reshaping their urban planning by focussing
on giving back the main role citizens have on them. Owing to the fact that there has been a sharp
increase in public space in the last decade such as public gardens and sports centres, in which one
should be invest in?

Studies have shown that living near public gardens has a positive impact on human lifespan. Despite the
fact that cities are still suffering from high pollutant concentrations, not only having a green area helps to
clean the air but also to lower the rocketing temperatures cities are suffering due to climate change.
What is more, greener places improve inhabitants mood and ease their stress which ends in a better
quality of life.

There is little doubt that sports centres are another valuable resource. Even though their space is limited
and on certain occasions are extremely packed, its upsides such as social interaction, a substantial
decrease in depression rates and hospitalisation requirements, are by far an outstanding reason to invest
in them. On top of that, sport activity is a crucial event every human needs for its successful
development, especially for the young ones.

In light of the above, both are essential facilities which need to be invested on a regular basis but, were I
to choose the most relevant one I would go for public gardens because not only do they allow citizens to
interact and breathe pure air, but also can become a space to do some exercise which will be killing two
birds with one stone. (268 words)
