How does Dickens present the theme of poverty in A Christmas carol?

In the end of stave 3, Dickens presents two characters, Ignorance and Want, they are a
representation of people in poverty and how the poor have been forgotten and neglected.
Dickens presents poverty in the novella as cruel and unwanted by the rich. Dickens uses a
variety of techniques in this scene, he uses listing a lot through to the end. “Meagre, ragged,
scowling, wolfish” meagre shows they are hungry and ragged they are in clothes that
probably have never been washed. Ignorance represents the ignorance of the rich and how
they have no sympathy for the poor, so they choose to treat the poor in horrible ways.
“Beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is doom.” This shows that the
boys need as much education as girls otherwise they would become thieves such a pick
pocketers. So, if they get an education they wouldn’t have to steal and get a good job and
not pass a bad influence on their children.
In the whole of the novella, Dickens present the poor as loving and charitable, most of the
rich on Christmas eve/day are kind to the poor except for scrooge showing there are still
people that despise the poor, even wishing they would die then keep living on with the
rich. The poor were also presented as outcasts, during out of Christmas they were ignored by
the rich unless if they were philanthropists who help the poor get a good life, some poor are
eft homeless or left in a small house with a large family just to help them live, as its shown
to us how rough it is for poor families to even have enough food. During the middle of stave
3, we visit the Cratchit family, showing they have an injured son, the spirit claiming he will
die if the cycle does not change. They also haven’t got enough money for a proper
Christmas dinner, but Dickens presents them to love their Christmas dinner and cherish and
savour every last bite, as it is always their favourite meal of the year and it gets better every
Christmas time.
