NUMERICAL PROBLEMS

- Sourav Misra (S.M. sir)

The answers are given in bold and red colour

1. A sample of radioactive substance shows an intensity of 2.3 mCi at a time t and an intensity of
2.3 mCi at a time t and an intensity of 1.62 mCi 600 seconds later. What is the half-life of the
radioactive element? (1187 sec)

2. To which radioactive series does 237Ac89 belong? (4n+3 series, i.e. Actinium series)

3. If a radionuclide decays for a time interval equal to the mean life of the radionuclide, what
fraction of the original activity has destroyed? (0.632 or 63.2%)

4. Find out half-life of a radionuclide if it gives 104 cpm and 2 hour later gives 3895cpm?(88.28min)

5. Half life of a radioelement is 2 years. The material is kept for 6 years. How much amount of 1gm
of that substance will be left after 6 years? (0.125 gm)

6. Calculate the density of the nucleus of 47Ag107. (1.18×1014 gm-atom-1cm-3)

7. An element of mass number 15 and isotopic mass 15.00486 amu has the mass defect of 0.12403
amu. Identify the element. ( nitrogen)

8. The nucleus 23Ne decays by β emission. Find out maximum Kinetic energy of the emitted
electron .Given : mass of 23Na = 22.994466 amu and mass of 23Na =22.989770 amu (4.37 MeV)

9. An amount of 7.32g CO2 was collected by burning a piece of wood. The total activity of the
produced CO2 was found to be 10.8 dpm. Find the age of wood sample. The current activity of a
freshly cut wood sample is 15.3 dpm/gm and the half-life of 14C= 5730 years.(8598 years)

10. Calculate the activity(rate of disintegration) of 0.1 gm 220Rn if the half life is 55.65
seconds.(3.42×1018dps)
