What is Cloud Storage ?

Cloud storage is a model of computer data
storage in which the digital data is stored in
logical pools, said to be on "the cloud".
Cloud Storage is a global secure and scalable
object store for immutable data such as
images, text, videos, or any other file
formats. You store objects in buckets, which
are associated with a project, which are
grouped under an organization. You can then
upload objects to the bucket and download
objects from it using the console or gsutil
commands.

History :
Cloud computing’s roots
can be traced all the way
back to the 1960s, when an
“intergalactic PC network”
was first proposed. It is
believed to have been
invented by Joseph Carl
Robnett Licklider in the
1960s with his work
on ARPANET to connect
people and data from
anywhere at any time.
In
1983, CompuServe offered
its consumer users a small
amount of disk space that could be used to store any files they chose to upload.
In 1994, AT&T launched PersonaLink Services, an online platform for personal and business
communication and entrepreneurship. The storage was one of the first to be all web-based,
and referenced in their commercials as, "you can think of our electronic meeting place as the
cloud. Amazon Web Services introduced their cloud storage service AWS S3 in 2006, and
has gained widespread recognition and adoption as the storage supplier to popular services
such as SmugMug, Dropbox, and Pinterest. 

Data Security in Cloud Storage :

By default, data at rest is encrypted. You have options to secure it with your own encryption
keys using Google Cloud’s Key Management service or at your own key management service
on premise. You can grant permission to specific members or teams or make the objects fully
public for use such as websites. When creating buckets, you have options depending on
budget, availability, and access frequency.

Object Versioning and Accessing Objects :

Cloud Storage offers automatic object versioning so you
don’t have to worry about versioning and can still access
the older version if needed. Once you have stored the
data, accessing it is easy with a single click API call for
all storage classes. Cloud Storage is a great data lake
choice for streaming and batch uploading data for big
data and ML projects.

Conclusion :
For businesses, like any new technology, early adopters of cloud computing attempt to gain a
competitive advantage. But economics will drive widespread adoption, and today with costs
dropping, the migration to the cloud is accelerating. Cloud-based services also often come
with added features and benefits. The dramatic increase in adoption of cloud computing
services has largely been driven by the significant benefits of using cloud-based software
applications versus buying, installing and maintaining on-premise solutions. Start-up
companies can be in business without investing in IT.
