I. Describe the Class

This lesson plan is built for a third-grade class containing 26 students. Two of these
students are ELL students.

II. Subject/Skill:

This is a lesson plan for the subject of science. How to differentiate between an insect
and an arachnid (Spider).

III. Objective(s)

- The students will learn and describe the physical differences between an arachnid
(spider) and an insect. Research will be done in groups then discussed out loud.

- Explain and describe how many body parts an insect and arachnid has.

- Explain and describe how many legs and pairs each has.

- Explain and describe if insects or arachnids have antennae.

- Explain and describe if insects and arachnids have compound or simple eyes.

IV. Procedures

- I will, introduce the students to the terms “insect,” and “arachnid.”

-
- We will, choose what teammate will answer what question and pull up the
websites given by the teacher.
-
- We will, brainstorm ideas of what types of insects or arachnids there are.

- They will collaborate and work together to find information on insects and
arachnids. All 6 groups will work to answer questions regarding both.

- Given one laptop per group, students will only open up the list of websites
that are given to them.

- Students will have 20 minutes to work with their teams and find information
on their bugs.
- Answers shall be written on the construction paper sheet that is given. A
drawn-out example of an arachnid and an insect should be included too.
- Each student will pick a question to answer, there are four. This means that
each student will have an opportunity to find information on a question; one
per student with the exception of the two ELL students. Students must find the
answer to their assigned question, however on both arachnids and insects.

- Once answers are found, students are to share their responses with their teams
and input their findings onto their construction paper.

V. Materials

- One laptop per table

- Construction paper handout

- Marker

- Pencil/ Eraser

- Science Journal

VI. Grouping Structures

- Students are sitting in six groups of four. Two of those groups have an ELL
student.

VII. Modifications

- Both ELL students are to sit with a group and next to another bilingual student
who may help. They may work together on finding the answer to the question
assigned.

VIII. Assessment

Independently, they must log their findings into their journals. Question and
answers should be written into their notebooks. Students must also include
what their favorite arachnid and insect is, along with three facts about the bug
he or she chose. Finally, students must include a drawing of both their favorite
arachnid and insect.
