ROAD PROFILE AND CROSS SECTION

I. Objectives

a. To determine the elevation of the ground points along the road to be profiled.

II. Instruments

1 unit - Engineers transit 1 pc - Plumb bob

1 roll - string 1 pc - 50-meter tape
10 pcs - marking pins

III. Procedure

1. Lay out a 200-meter line to be profiled along the side of a road. Set marking pins at
every 10-meter interval.
2. Set up and level the instrument at a convenient location away from the line and take a
back sight on an assumed benchmark to determine the height of instrument.
3. For straight roads, align the points using marking pins on the opposite side of the road
at every 10-meter interval.
4. To determine the width of the road, extend the tape across from the 0 + 000 station by
3:4:5 method. From there, continue to run the measurement at the same interval.
5. Take and record intermediate foresights to as many points as can be taken
conveniently from the instrument position.
6. When further readings cannot be observed, establish a turning point, and take a
foresight on it to determine its elevation.
7. The instrument is then taken forward and the new height of instrument is determined
by taking a backsight on the turning point. Succeeding foresight readings are then
obtained.
8. The procedure is repeated until the end of the line (sta. 0 + 200) is reached and its left
and right edge is reached.
