Lesson Plan Title: Family Tree

Concept / Topic To Teach: Differences in families.

General Goal(s): Get to know the different families in the classroom.

Specific Objectives: Students will learn about and understand more about their classmate’s

families.

Required Materials:

● Book: Me and My Family Tree by Joan Sweeney

● Example of Family Tree

● White Board

● White Board Markers

● Pencil

● Paper

● Markers

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): What is a family tree? Who is in it?


Step-By-Step Procedures:

First, the class will discuss what a family tree is together. Then we will read Me and My Family

Tree by Joan Sweeney together. After students will go back to their desks and the teacher will

show the example of the family tree. Class and teacher will make another example of a family

tree together on the board. Students will make their own family trees and on the back of the

family tree, each student will write something that makes their family special. The class will

present their family trees to the rest of the class.

Plan For Independent Practice: Students will make their own family tree/

Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): After presenting the family trees we will discuss how all

families are different and special in their own ways.

Assessment Based On Objectives: What is a family tree?

Possible Connections To Other Subjects: Art- Drawing a tree, Social Studies- Knowledge of

different families
