Case Study #4

Question 1:

What advice would you give Joan as to the position she should take in the

meeting?

Answer 1:

I think that in the meeting Joan should take the position of if he isn’t growing academically then

he won’t be able to keep up with the social development with his fellow classmates. If Donald

doesn’t understand or is not learning what is being taught in the classroom he will fall even more

behind academically. If Donald remains in his class and is getting the help he needs to learn he

can grow academically and see Joan’s students during recess or lunch.

Question 2:

What is the advice to Marilyn and Warren?

Answer 2

Since Marilyn values Donald’s social growth her position should be that Donald is starting to

socialize as a “normal” student so he should be able to stay inside Joan’s classroom. It seems

that Warren doesn’t want to make a decision regarding Donald so he should play to the position

of devil’s advocate and ask each teacher why their position is more important.

Question 3

From your other reading and personal experience what suggestions would you

make to Joan about what she might do in her class to enhance the possibilities of

success for Donald?

Answer 3

Joan did want more of a challenge for this year so she could spend more individual time with

Donald during the class to be sure that he understands the content or she could give him

alternative assignments so that he can demonstrate the same knowledge as the other students but

in a different way.

Question 4

4. What else might Marilyn do?

Answer 4

Marilyn could have Donald go into Joan’s classroom for part of the day and Marilyn’s

classroom for the rest of the day so Donld could get extra help from Marilyn. Marilyn could help

Joan by helping Donald when he comes back into her classroom and making sure he is

understanding the information being learned in Joan’s classroom. Marilyn could ask Joan what

they are learning that week in the classroom, and Marilyn could review that information and

practice throughout the week or give him other assignments to work on to help him get a better

understanding.
