Pieter Hugo – ‘The Hyena and Other Men’ (2008)

Pieter Hugo shot the series ‘The Hyena & Other Men’ in Nigeria. Pieter was captivated by the first
pictures of the ‘hyena men’ that he came across randomly. He went to live with them on the periphery
of Abuja in a shantytown – a group of men, a little girl, three hyenas, four monkeys and a few rock
pythons. Nigerian newspapers told him that these men were bank robbers, bodyguards, drug dealers,
debt collectors. Myths surrounded them. It turned out that they were a group of itinerant minstrels,
performers who used the animals to entertain crowds and sell traditional medicines. Pieter realised that
what he found fascinating was the hybridisation of the urban and the wild, and the paradoxical
relationship that the handlers have with their animals – sometimes doting and affectionate, sometimes
brutal and cruel. When looking back at the notebooks he had kept while with them, the words
‘dominance’, ‘codependence’ and ‘submission’ kept appearing. These pictures depict much more than
an exotic group of travelling performers in West Africa. The motifs that linger are the fraught
relationships we have with ourselves, with animals and with nature. Read more of Pieter’s fascinating
journey here.
2. Applying the 5W+1H framework in photography research method;
- What
What is the primary issue?
About a photographer that photographs a group of itinerant minstrels, performers who used the animals to
entertain crowds and sell traditional medicines and agreed to with the animal wranglers to kanu in the northern
of lagos.
What is the primary subject and subject matter?
The first time met up with the hyena men, as they have become known, the group was staying in a ramshackle
three-bedroom apartment in Dei Dei Junction, a suburb of the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

What are you photographing?

These photographs came about after a friend emailed me an image taken on a cellphone through a car window in
Lagos, Nigeria, which depicted a group of men walking down the street with a hyena in chains. A few days later I
saw the image reproduced in a South African newspaper with the caption ‘The Streets of Lagos’. Nigerian
newspapers reported that these men were bank robbers, bodyguards, drug dealers, debt collectors. Myths
surrounded them. A few weeks later I was on a plane to Lagos. Abiola met me at the airport and together we
took a bus to Benin City where the ‘hyena men’ had agreed to meet us. However, when we got there they had
already departed for Abuja. In Abuja we found them living on the periphery of the city in a shantytown – a group
of men, a little girl, three hyenas, four monkeys and a few rock pythons. It turned out that they were a group of
itinerant minstrels, performers who used the animals to entertain crowds and sell traditional medicines. The
animal handlers were all related to each other and were practising a tradition passed down from generation to
generation. I spent eight days travelling with them.

- Who
Who Is the Audience?

someone loves portraitist and documentary also people who like animals with the main theme is the African
society.

- When
This photo was taken in 2005 but the photographer & hyna group took the photo in 2007 because the photo was
taken IN 2005 EVEN THOUGH THE PHOTOGRAPHER WANTED TO TAKE A MORE INTIMATE PHOTO WITH HYNA
GROUP within the span of 2 years and 2 times. The image is located in Nigeria city of Abuja Kanu and its
surroundings.
- Where
Where is the event take place and Where did he photograph?
This photo is taken in Nigeria a multinational state inhabited by more than 250 ethnic groups speaking 500
distinct languages, all identifying with a wide variety of cultures. The three largest ethnic groups are the Hausa–
Fulani in the north, Yoruba in the west, and Igbo in the east, together comprising over 60% of the total
population. The official language is English, chosen to facilitate linguistic unity at the national level. Nigeria is
divided roughly in half between Muslims, who live mostly in the north, and Christians, who live mostly in the
south. The country has the world's fifth-largest Muslim population and sixth-largest Christian population, with a
minority practicing indigenous religions, such as those native to the Igbo and Yoruba ethnicities. Nigeria's
constitution ensures freedom of religion. in Lagos, Nigeria, and in this city below: BENIN CITY, ABUDJA, SHANTY
TOWN, KANU.

- WHY
This photobook emphasizes photography about the tribe and hyena other animals. The creative process is
discussed from the author's perspective based on photography as art and photography as an expression
of human existence.
This book also contains photographs by Pieter hugo on animal and indigenous peoples in several city of
Nigeria. The following factors were the main sources used in the research of this book. This book
describes the science of aesthetics in a simple and easy to understand manner, especially if it is applied to
understanding an aesthetic object.
Pieter Hugo was assessed using qualitative methods in this study. In qualitative research, the researcher
himself becomes the instrument, in other words the instrument is a person or human instrument. Data
collection was done by triangulation (combined) and presented descriptively about the facts found in the
field.
Problem Identification
Based on the things that have been described, several problems related to the aesthetics of photography
can be formulated are:
1. How do you interpreted Pieter Hugo in hyena & other man photography in terms of his photographic
visual aesthetic?
2. Is there any relationship between the visual aesthetics of Pieter Hugo photography and the visual
meaning of photography?
Reason (Data & Fact)
Data collecting
In this study several data collection techniques were used to support the assessment such as:
a. Literature Study
In this study, one main data source was used, namely book Hyena and Other Men. In-depth observations
were made of the works of Pieter Hugo in this book. The goal is not only to get data as a sample to be
analyse but also to see a trend that has emerged from several of Pieter’s works. Studies literature is also
done by searching for data in the form of books, articles, magazines about Pieter and data having the
relationship with the theme of photography studies that will be discussed.
b. Page Library
Page library is data quoted from the media electronics, mostly from the internet. Several websites are
used as references.
Data-Selecting Technique
The data selection process focus more on the subject and later research can be more effective and
efficient. The data that is collected will be selected to obtain optimal research. Data reduction is done
based on relevance study of Pieter’s photo works with different aspects.
Objectives
A. Analyse and describe the visual aspect of photography in Pieter Hugo work in the book Genesis.
B. Analyse and describe the meaning of photo in Pieter Hugo Hyena & Other man book
Why are you photographing?
Because Pieter Hugo want to be different to take another point of view to show The tamed hyenas are
submissive while powerful, massive, and terrifying that they are restrained and gagged by their tamers.
This series explores the difficult relationship between the photographer and his subjects as well as the
subjects and the animals.
How
How do you approach & engage the subject?
Hugo spent a week on the road with the hyena men. Hugo looked for instances where the opposing
elements in their acts were so much apparent instead of capturing the performances of the hyena men.
Therefore, he focused on photographs. He would take a walk with one of the group members in the
streets, and then take a photo whenever a chance presented itself. Hugo traveled from city to city using
public mini-buses.
How do you photographing?
It all started in 2003 after Hugo received images of Nigeria’s Gadawan Kura, or hyena handlers from a
friend taken by a mobile phone camera through a car window in the street of Lagos, Nigeria. The image
portrayed a group of young men casually walking downtown with a hyena in chains. A few days later,
Hugo says he saw the image reproduced in a South African newspaper with the caption The Streets of
Lagos. However, the local newspapers in Nigeria reported these hyena men as bank robbers, debt
collectors, bodyguards, and drug dealers. According to Hugo, there were a lot of myths surrounding them,
and that is what captivated him.

Photographic technique (Point of view, angle shot, composition etc)

He wanted to get more involved and engaged, to aggressively cross-examine the voyeuristic scrutiny that
is intrinsic in photography, instead of ignoring it. As a result, Hugo developed his signature style, which
involves gallant portraits that confront the viewer directly. And with this new photography technique,
Hugo has had a substantial impact on the field. Hugo’s work, which has been deemed controversial in
some quarters, has stimulated varying reactions and maintained his pledge to an authentic and direct
approach. Hugo has traversed numerous countries in Africa, capturing the real lives of the locals through
his lenses.
