CLEANSING OR EVACUATING ENEMA


I. Definition: The cleansing of the lower bowels with the use of solution introduced into rectum.
II. Purposes:
1. To stimulate peristalsis movement of the intestine when defective.
2. To cleanse the rectum and colon.
3. To remove flatus.
III Materials used:
1. Bath blanket
2. bedpan, with cover and lining
3. Tray with:
a. lubricant
b. rubber sheet if not found on the bed
c. kidney basin

PROCEDURE RATIONALE
In the utility room:

1. Check doctor's order.

2. Prepare the materials needed

3. Open the fleet enema and expose the tip

4. Put lubricant on a piece of toilet paper


and apply around enema tip and place on
kidney basin.

At bedside:

1. Explain procedure: purpose, discomfort


expected and nature of cooperation expected.

2. Bring tray to the patient's bedside after the


explanation.

3. Screen bed.

4. Remove all pillows except one and lower head


of bed.

5. Fanfold top sheet to the foot part. Replace


with bath blanket.

6. Place patient on left sim's lateral position.

7. Insert lubricated end of enema tip completely


into rectum. Advise patient to
breathe through mouth to facilitate insertion.

8. Press the fleet enema bottle until the solution is


completely consumed

9. Let the patient stay in position for 1 to 5


minutes until she/he feels the urge to defecate
10. Assist the patient to comfort room or offer bed
pan on bed.

11. Replace beddings, place patient on


comfortable position. Air room.
12. Do after care

13. Chart time, kind and amount of solution,


reaction of patient, character of return flow
