NMR spectroscopy is an ideal technique for identifying the structure of molecules

using NMR spectroscopy. Higher electron density around hydrogen atoms creates
greater opposition to the applied magnetic
field. As a result, the H atom experiences a lower magnetic field and can resonate
at a lower frequency. The peak on
the NMR spectrum for this H atom would shift upfield. These H atoms are referred
to as being shielded.

If the H atom is surrounded by elements that reduce the electron cloud, then, it
would experience a higher magnetic
field and would resonate at a higher radio frequency. This phenomenon is called
de-shielding.
