LESSON #1

TOPIC: Algebra

SUB-TOPIC: Operating with Directed Numbers

OBJECTIVES

Students will:

 Perform accurate operations with directed numbers

 Identify the absolute value of directed numbers

CONTENT

+
A positive number added to a positive number gives a positive number. 3 + +5 = +8
-
A negative number added to a negative number gives a negative number. 6 + -1 = -7

Adding a positive number means ADD. 5 + +4 = 5 + 4 = 9

Adding a negative number means SUBTRACT. 5 + -4 = 5 – 4 = 1
Subtracting a positive number means SUBTRACT. 5 - +4 = 5 – 4 = 1
Subtracting a negative number means ADD 5 - -4 = 5 + 4 = 9
NB: when the signs are unlike, the answer takes the sign of the larger number

When MULTIPLYING/DIVIDING;
(+) x (+) = (+)
(-) x (-) = (+)
(+) x (-) or (-) x (+) = (-)
NB: when the signs are unlike the answer is negative, if the signs are the same the answer is positive.
