Disability Inclusive Development (Education Support)

Story of Subham Singh

Shri Nanhey Singh a resident of Gangaganj in Kanpur Nagar District of Uttar Pradesh, is a
person affected with leprosy who also has grade two deformities in both hands (Claw Hands) &
Right drop foot due to the disease his life was filled with uncertainty and hopelessness as he was
the only breadwinner of the family.

During his regular participation and improvement by self-care camp organized by NLR, he was
also informed that NLR also provides support to a dependent with leprosy for making their life
better.

With this ray of hope, he met Mr. Mantosh CBR coordinator for the educational support of his
children.

NLR supported his three children and was provided Education support. From a life full of
uncertainty now children are studying and planning a better future.

Subham Singh who has been reading in Class XII his schooling with support from NLR
Foundation approached for further support for his higher studies. He was provided support in
payment of his college fees and stationery required for his academics
Presently Subham has the confidence to face the world and has equipped himself with education
to face the challenge in society and job with courage and confidence to achieve a dignified life
for himself and the members of his family.

Mr. Naney SIngh said NLR came as an angel in his life at a time when he could not see any ray
of hope and was afraid of his children’s future. Now he proudly says that his children will not
have a struggling life as he had due to a lack of education and financial assistance.

Subham Singh further told that he does not feel the stigma of being a child of a leprosy-affected
person instead he educates others that it’s a curable disease and spreads the knowledge of
Leprosy along with its identification and treatment.

He told me there was a time when none of his brother and sister was invited to their friend’s
party and ignored in a social gathering but now due to his efforts in awareness generation &
dealing with stigma related issues, related to leprosy He & his brother & sisters along with
family are accepted in the society & welcomed to participate in social functions & gatherings.

NLR India Foundation is in regular touch with the family and children to motivate and boost
their confidence for a better future
