Guide on Basic Phonics Sound

Regular practice of basic phonics sound gives a child to relate an alphabet to the
words they see or hear. Phonics helps the child to read by correlating sounds with
alphabets.

What is Basic Phonics?

Example: Apple, Alligator, Ant, Aeroplane, Axe,Acorn = A child would be taught in
phonics class, “A” makes a sound “aeh”. Therefore, if they hear “Apple”, they know it
starts with letter “A”

(Verbal / Writing / Matching / Listening / Visualize) Practice.

At first might face some confusion, after few practice, children grasp fast.

1. Play with phonics sound/make it a music (Children learn fast with music)
“A” makes a sound “aeh”, “aeh”,”aeh”. “A” makes a sound? Your turn~
“B” makes a sound “buh”,”buh”,”buh”. “B” makes a sound? Your turn~

2. Listening phonics sound practice.

.Ask, “Dog” starts with which letter? Or Ends with which letter? (Hint them to relate:
“D” makes a sound”,”G” makes a sound?

3.Visual picture to words practice.

Practice matching picture to few words e.g “Cat”,”Ball”,”Toy”. (Hint: “Ball” starts
with which letter? “B” makes a sound? Help to relate). By sound B, “buh”, they can
relate it to Ball.

4. Practice writing from its phonics sound.

Practice writing alphabet. ___pple. (Hint: “Apple” starts with which letter? “A”
makes a sound? Help to relate). By sound, they know apple, starts with letter “A”.

5. Read Books.
Try not to read out books all yourself. Let the child read along the words you read by
pointing and repeating at every words you read. Slight enforce to remember
frequenty used words like (e.g in, the, is, I, am, a , are, he, she, It, This, That).
Recommand Lvl1, Lvl2, etc children books.
(Purpose: Let the child visualize / recognize / memorize / frequently observed ) words
inorder to get familiar with alphabets.

6. Keep in practice. (For Your Information)

For Kindergarten 1, practice basic phonics.
For Kindergarten 2, practice writing sentences / Spelling.
