Functions Student Handout

Grade 11, University Preparation (MCR3U)

Course Description
This course introduces the mathematical concept of the function by extending students' experiences with
linear and quadratic relations. Students will investigate properties of discrete and continuous functions,
including trigonometric and exponential functions; represent functions numerically, algebraically, and
graphically; solve problems involving applications of functions; investigate inverse functions; and develop
facility in determining equivalent algebraic expressions. Students will reason mathematically and
communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems.

Major Strands: 1. Characteristics of Functions 2. Exponential Functions

3. Discrete Functions 4. Trigonometric Functions

Student Expectations
1. Homework should be completed daily to your best ability.
2. An organized notebook is important to success in math. You must have a separate math notebook.
3. Mastery of math is exemplified by your ability to teach others. Participate in class.

Test/Assignment Policy
1. If a student knows he will be absent for a test, he should discuss this with the teacher before the
test date.
2. If a student is absent on the day of the test, he should be prepared to write the test the day he
returns to class. If a student does not meet the above expectations, he may receive a mark of
zero.

Marking Scheme
There are 4 mark reporting periods during the year:
1. October Midterm Report (*letter grade)
2. Christmas Report (includes the Christmas Midterm Test)
3. March Midterm Report
4. Final June Report (70% term work, 20% final cumulative exam, 10% final summative)

KICA breakdown: 20-15-15-20

Term work includes mark value

a unit test at the end of each chapter (sometimes 2 tests for very long chapters) high
observation and communication assessment low
chapter topic tests (teacher’s discretion) low
take home assignments, chapter tasks, projects low

Marks requirement for future math courses

Students planning to enroll in MHF4U1 must have a minimum mark of 70%.
Students planning to enroll in MHF4U1 and MCV4U1 must have a minimum mark of 75%.
Students planning to enroll in AP Calculus (MHF4U2 and MCV4UP) must have a minimum mark of 85%.
Failing to meet the criteria will result in upgrading at summer school or changing the course selection.
