EXTRACT:
Colombian superstar Shakira and FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique announced
Saturday they were calling time on their relationship of more than a decade. The 45-
year-old “Hips don’t Lie” songstress is one of the biggest names in the global music
industry and has sold more than 60 million albums. Spanish football hero Pique, 35, won
the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship, and is a three-time
Champions League winner with Barcelona. The couple share two sons and had been
living together for years on the outskirts of Barcelona. “We regret to confirm that we are
separating. For the well-being of our children, who are our upmost priority, we request
respect for (our) privacy,” they said in a statement. With her mix of Latin and Arabic
rhythms and rock influence, three-time Grammy winner Shakira is one of the biggest
stars from Latin America, scoring major global hits with songs such as “Hips don’t Lie”
and “Whenever, Wherever”.
In 2020, she performed with Jennifer Lopez at the halftime show of the NFL’s Super
Bowl championship final in Miami, typically one of the most-watched half-hours in US
television. The couple announced their separation just over a week after Spanish court
documents inched Shakira closer to standing trial in Spain for tax fraud after a Barcelona
court dismissed an appeal from the singer. Spanish prosecutors accuse her of defrauding
the Spanish tax office out of 14.5 million euros ($15.5 million) on income earned
between 2012 and 2014.
They say she moved to Spain in 2011 when her relationship with Pique became public
but maintained official tax residency in the Bahamas until 2015. Her defense lawyers
say she moved to Spain full time only in 2015 and insist that her “conduct on tax matters
has always been impeccable in all the countries she had to pay taxes”. In an interview
with AFP in 2019, Shakira said temporarily losing her voice two years earlier had been
“the darkest moment of her life” and affected her “deeply”. She later recovered her voice

naturally, without needing to undergo surgery as recommended by doctors and
subsequently carried out a world tour in 2018.
SUMMARY:
On Saturday, Shakira and Gerard Pique confirmed separation after 12 years of living
together, the couple was sorry about the announcement, and they requested privacy for
the well-being of their 2 beloved sons. The 35 years old Spanish football hero Pique from
FC Barcelona won the 2010 World Cup and three European Championships which is the
third time. Shakira, 45, is one of the biggest names in the global music industry with
significant achievements like three Grammys and 60 million sold albums. In 2015, she
was accused of defrauding the Spanish tax office out of 14.5 million euros ($15.5
million) on income in 2014 - 2015 but her defense lawyer insisted that she had always
completed tax liability. After her world tour in 2018, Shakira admitted with AFP that she
had naturally recovered from “the darkest moment of her life” on which she temporarily
lost her voice.

Factors involved in celebrities’s divorces mostly come from the working environment
rather than celebritỉes themselves. Firstly, they desire for success; therefore, they take up
a tight and tiring schedule that keeps them occupied days to weeks, even months. Not
being able to spend time with their partners makes it look like they are having a long-
distance relationship which will lead to the “out of sight, out of mind” situation. Another
case is that in a relationship between two celebrities, neither of them take a step back to
support the other, and that of course will bring conflict. Secondly, temptations are
especially high for celebrities since they are surrounded by plenty of beautiful and
charming people. As mentioned above, celebrities are at work for days and weeks, which
means that they will have more chances to see and perhaps to flirt with those people.
They might eventually change their love for their partners because we all know that small

rain lays great dust. Risks of infidelity could be romantic movie scenes such as hugging
or kissing, on-screen romances might possibly turn into off-screen romances. The last
one is the impact of the media on stars’ lives and career, each of their moves are followed
by the media, it’s diving too deep into their private lives. People are especially interested
in celebrities’ marriages and relationships, and some stars do realize and notice that, so
they decided to tie the knot just to be on the first page. When they think the marriage no
longer benefits them or they just can’t seek anymore fame, they simply put an end to it.
Celebrities now seem to lose control over their own marriage as the outside environment
is having too much influence on it, and it’s unlikely that the situation will improve soon.
