Facebook Faces $3.

2 Billion UK Class Action Over Abuse of Market Dominance

- Charvi

Date: 17 January 2022

Meta Platforms earlier known as Facebook has been slapped with £2.3 billion ($3.2 billion)
class-action lawsuit in the U.K. for allegedly abusing its market dominance to exploit the
personal data of 44 million users. The lawsuit accuses Facebook of imposing unfair terms and
conditions that required users to surrender valuable personal data to the company to access
the social media platform.

The suit is brought by Liza Lovdahl Gormsen, a senior adviser to Britain's Financial Conduct
Authority and a competition law academic, on behalf of people in Britain who had used
Facebook between 2015 and 2019. Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan are the law firm
representing Lovdahl Gormsen at London's Competition Appeal Tribubal, where this case is
set to be heard.

Lovdahl Gormsen acknowledges Facebook’s role in connecting people in one place, but is
shaken by its abuse of its market dominance for imposing unfair terms and conditions on
ordinary people.
