CUMT105 Introduction to Statistics TUTORIAL WORKSHEET 4 & 5

September 2020 Time: XXXX hours

Attempt ALL questions before the tutorial session.

A1. A shop has kept a record of sales for July and August of 2009. The sales are summarised in
the following frequency distribution table.

Daily Sales ($) 60-70 70-80 80-90 90-100 100-105 105-120

Number of Days 5 22 8 13 11 3

(a) From this frequency distribution table, draw

(i) a histogram.
(ii) a frequency polygon.
(iii) the ‘less than’ cumulative frequency curve (ogive) and use it to estimate the median.
(iv) a box and whisker plot.
(b) compute and interpret
(i) the median. Compare it with the estimate from part a(iii) above and comment.
(ii) the range, the mean, and the modal daily sales.
(iii) the sample standard deviation of the daily sales.
(iv) the semi-inter quartile range of the daily sales.
(v) the 25th percentile and the 76th percentile of the daily sales.
(vi) the coefficient of variation of the daily sales.

A2. Consider the following data.

76 65 67 57 77 74 67 60 67 73 93 78 68 60 73 66 56 62 76 55 62 73 72 74 64 66 76 69 72

(a) Calculate and interpret the range and the averages for these data.
(b) Calculate the sample variance and standard deviation of the above data set.
(c) Calculate and interpret Q1 , Q2 , Q3 , the inter-quartile range and the semi-inter quartile
range.
(d) Calculate and interpret the 20th and the 85th percentiles.

A3. (a) Using the above data, draw a stem and leaf diagram.
(b) Using some of the results in A1 above, draw a box and whisker plot.

A4. (a) Below are recent output based bonuses paid to workers at a furniture making SME.

47 31 42 33 58 51 25 28 53 29 56 46 51 30 43 56 37 37 29 39 53 51 52 35

(i)Present the bonuses on a stem and leaf display and comment.

(ii)Calculate the averages of the bonuses and give an interpretation of each.
(iii)What name is given to data that has two observations appearing equally the most?
(iv) What is the range of the bonuses? Comment on the value.
(v) Compute the standard deviation of the bonuses.
(vi) Calculate the coefficient of variation for the bonuses.
(vii) Compute three percentiles of your choice for the bonuses and comment on them.
(viii) Calculate and interpret the quartiles.
(ix) Draw a box and whisker plot.
(x) Construct a frequency distribution table with five equal classes using 25 as the
lower limit for the first class.
(xi) Using the grouped bonuses, compute and interpret
(a) the averages.
(b) the standard deviation.
(c) the quartiles and, hence, the quartile deviation.
(d) the coefficient of variation.
(xii) Using the grouped bonuses, draw
(a) a histogram.
(b) a frequency polygon.
(c) an ogive and use it to estimate the median.
(b) Another SME into the retailing of electronics recently gave its employees the following
output based bonuses.

74 13 24 33 85 15 52 82 26 92 56 64 15 34 27 37 73 92 93 35 16 25 53

(i) Perform the tasks in part (a) above for this company.
(ii) By comparing (1) the means, (2) the standard deviations, and (3) the coefficient of
variations for the two companies state, in each case, the company you would chose
to work for.
(c) (i) Draw the box and whisker plots for the two SMEs on the same axis.
(ii) State the SME that you would chose to work for if you always achieve 50% of your
output targets.
