OWNERS MANUALINSTALLATION
Section |
‘The Polecat is a completely hydraulic powered derrick, designed specifically
for digger-derrick operation in the construction and maintenance of overhead
electrical lines in utility systems, When properly mounted onan adequate size
truck, the Polecat becomes an Udependent, mobile work unit able to dig holes
and set poles, Install crossarms or transformers, string wire, reach heights
to 42 feet and ft loads as heavy as 10,000 pounds, The unit also provides firm
support for elevating personnel in insulated buckets to aerial working heights as high
as 42 feet. The basic Polecet consists of the following major components
MAINFRAME
‘This weldment is the structural support for the working hoom and the fecility for
properly securing the boom 10 the truck, It i bolted to the truck frame. The as
Sembled structure includes: outriggers. controls and all requized hydraulic lines pre-
assembled.
MIONO/DYNE TURRET
‘Thettone/Dyne Turret bolted to the mainframe top serves as the intermediate
Structural device between the boom gnc mainframe and functions as a com~
pack, Independent, hydraulic raoter drives machanists for rotating the boom

assembly,
Boom
‘The boom consists of an ouler stationary section and an nnce telescoping section
The inner seetion is telescoped in and out by 2 hydraulic cylinder enclosed in the
boom assembly. Porting lube assemblies are provided for the boom tip winch and
digger functions Ineates on ¢ne hoon. These shielded assembles telescope with the
inner section. The boom assembly is shipped separately.C655 — Corner Mount
Begin installation of the Polecat by first examining
the specifieations of the truck on which the Polecat is
to be installed. The minimum specifications given be-
low must be met or exceeded before attempting to in~
stall, The installation operation 1s outlined in the re-
mainder of this installation section in the factory rec~
ommended sequence to avold unnecessary operations
and oversights.
Polecat installations on trucks with torsion bar front
suspension ar "X" braced truck frames should be a-
voided whenever possible, as these create difficulties
not usually encountered. ‘These are not insurmount-
fable, but they do cause additional expense in labor
and time, Consult the factory for advice and recom~
mendations 4s this Manual will not cover the addition
al steps required for these installations.

be shipped completely reassembled or in three major
parts: the mainframe is shipped with all of its allied
parts (turret, outriggers, etc, ) assembled asa package
and with all hoses stored inside the turret casting; the
booms are shipped assembled 2s a package with all
allied parts attached; the third part will include all
Joose parts such as connections, underdrive, mount -
ing brackets and bolts, and topping eylinder.
With all preparation completed (fishplating, pump &
PTO mounted, etc.) the mainirame may oe mounted on
truck. A crane or hoist capable of handling at least
4000 pounds with sufficient safety factor must be used,

Attach the lfting cables to the top of the Polecat main-
frame. Care should be taken during the mounting oper-
ation to prevent damage to any exposed hydraulic tubing
‘or hose, Center the mainframe onthe truck frame allow=
ing a minimum of two ireh ead clearance,
‘The mounting angle brackets required to secure the
Polecat to the truck frame are shipped in a bos with
other loose parts. With the Polecat mainframe in the
Gesired location, position the mounting brackets flush
against the fishplate and align the holes with those in
the mainframe base angles. Install the mounting bolts
and draw them down snug enough to hold the bracket in
position, Secure the bracket to the fishplate with 2 full,
and continuous weld top and bottom ONLY.
NG BOOM AND TOPPING CYLINDER
After the mainframe is mounted and secured to the
truck, mount the boom topping eylinder by placing the
‘base end of the cylinder in the turret to align the pin
holes and insert the pin and secure with the bolt ant
rod eye provided. The topping cylinder waighs approx-
imately 200 pounds. After the pin is inserted, the ey-
liner may be left hanging until after the boom is in=
stalled, Care shoule be taken during these aperations
to prevent damaging any hose stowed insice the turret,
To install the boom, a crane or other Lifting device
capable of handling zt least 3000 pounds with suffi
cient safety factor must be used. Prepare the area on
the boom where the lifting cable will attach with a
rubber pad or other material to protect the boon fin-
ish while handling, Raise the boom assembly up and
into theturret to align the boom and tirret pin holes.
Insert the boom hinge pin and secure the pin with the
rod eye and bolt. Now raise the evlinder wp into the
boom and secure therod end of the cylinder by insert=
Ang the pin provided,
Tt may be necessary to extend or retract the cylinder
when mounting in order to align the pin holes. This
ean be done either by hand or by introducing com
pressed alr into the bottom port to extend, or the top
port to retract. The alignment of the cylinder and
boom pin holes can also be accomplished by raising or
lowering the boom using the lifting device or crane
with the boom hinge pin installed. ‘The latter method
is uswally best due ta the holding valve in the base of
this cylinder.
After the boom and topping. cylinder are installed, it
will be necessary to connect the hoses stowed in ‘the
turret to the boom and topping cylinder. Connect these
by their coupling and line numbers as Indicated on the

PUMP SPEED ADUSTMENT
|All hydraulic pumps supplied by Pitman for use on the
Polecat attain requised maximum volume at 1800,
RPM. The throttle control for the Polecat should be
set not to exceed the maximum truck engine RPM re~
Quired to develop and maintain under load the above
speeds on the P.O. output shaft, Thismeans that the
throttle setting on the truck engine will have to be ad~
justed according to P, T, O, output percentage of engine
speed, For example, a truck with a P.T.0. output
speed of 90% engine speed must have the Polecat throttle
Setting adjusted to achieve maximum pump speed of
1800, Divide 1800 by .90, The maximum engine speed
would be 2909 RPM, ‘This maximum speed setting is
Important to the operating performance of the Polecat
‘nd should be the first thing checked when operations
Seem too slow, See page 3-8 for more information and
examples on calculating the proper engine speeds for
peak pump performance,
Engine speeds can be checked by installing an accur-
ate electric tachometer to the engine distributor. These
pump speeds are sufficient for all operations within
the capacity rating of this equipment, provided the
proper pump has been installed and the truck engine
can maintain this speed under load,
Do not attempt to operate the hydraulic
pump until the reservoir is filled with
the proper hydraulic fluid and alt hy-
draulie hoses installed and fittings
checked for tightness, If the pump is
jerated dry, it can be badly damaged
ina very short period of time,
BOOM SUPPORT
DIAGRAM
‘A boom support is required for this unit, It should be
focatea at the end of the boom providing support near the
boom tip. All boom supports should have a pad Sitting the
oor contour where the boom will rest as shown on the
diagram 6. ftern 1INAL INSPECTION & ADJUSTMENTS
Several inspections, adjustments and tests must be
perlormes before placing the Polecat inan operational
status. These steps are necessary to assure all com
ponents are in proger working order and the unit mects
or exceeds the minimum specifications for stability.
Performance of these steps is vital to the protection
of the equipment and the safety of the operator. They
must be performed in the sequence given.
Fill the of? reservoir to "{ull” reading on the dipstick
snd place the unit in operation. Operate the oatriggers,
up and down several times to'purge any air {rom in=
side the cyliniers. Afterward operate the boom through
severalshorl cycles, Watch carefully toprevent hitting.
Ihe eabor body with'the boom oF loadline, While oper-
ating, visually Inspect the unit for hydraulic leaks, If
nu leaks aze discovered, the unit is ready to be aper-
ated through the test cyéles.
During: the above procedure, check the oil reservoir
repeatedly and maintain at “Kull” reading on dipstick
