For each athlete there is an ideal model of movement, depending on his/her physical (anthropometric) features. If we look at people walking it is clear how everyone adjusts his/her way of walking according to many parameters that a computer is not able to capture. However, the comparison between the theoretical biomechanics model (maximum efficiency) of movement and the real action of an athlete allows instructors to help to correct both position and action in order to improve performance and reduce traumas. Acommon person could be instead less interested in improving his/her athletic performance, but certainly wishes to make sports safely with great attention to the reduction of traumas of muscles, joints and bones. My long study on how to facilitate the ski-at-the-foot walking arises from all these considerations, that is the wish of understanding what to do to do sports, remaining healthy as long as possible, © Maruelli sas - all right reserved Natural Walking Plate 2 Pee San Vs 2) WALKING (a VLAYE www.n-w-b. cons x ra SD ‘As can be immediately to see our Natural Walking Plate (and/or Bindings) free your toe-tip, so the walking, as into the followings picture become more natural. But also half of the weight of the bindings rest onto the snow too. The “oscillation of the legs’, or “swing’ is one of the cost-less phase in walking locomotion. Was immediately clear that swing cost much less than “sliding on skins” What is also clear is that the unlocked feet can “roll” on the ground involving all the bones and muscles of the feet and of the legs. Tha cannot be don with old binding ski technique an with plastic boots that locks the feet. Below: the skialp step is a more simple and unnatural sliding with only 3 tasks: 1) “traction” position: legs and arms cooperate to propelling the body ahead 2) one legs advancement to stand on both legs 3) sliding to new traction position 1 © Maruelli sas - all right reserved LET’S INTRODUCE SOME BASIC BIOMECHANICS: Fig.1 © Maruelli sas - all right reserved ¥ a 4 Fig.2 Let's start from these two simple shots to remark what everybody knows: both during Walking (Fig.1) and Running (Fig.2), the tiptoe of the ‘forward’ foot rises and it is free to assume a position very similar to the static one, i.e. the one when the athlet is motionless (angle with the tibia of 90° or less) Amore accurate analysis would lead to many other considerations, but they are not the purpose of this “presentation” as remarked before. Among the different activities that can be done in order to spend one’s spare time in contact with nature there is the skis-at-the-feet walking This particular movement , compared to the normal walking, has to take into consideration two elements with very variable characteristics: equipment (skis and ski boots) and snow (very variable and slippery...) Let's analyse separately some kinds of ski-at-the-foot walking according to the equipment: A) Walking with Mountaineering Skis (followiong as: “SKIALP”) - The equipment is heavy (10-20 times heavier compared to running shoes !) - The bindings constrain feet at the tiptoes that, as a consequence, cannot rise from the ground (without raising all the ski) The movement of an inexperienced athlete who wants to use Skialp skis only to walk on flat land is very different from the one of an athlete, Due to the heavier skis and rigid heavier boots, Racers too, can just be launched in “pushed” gait (like cross-country skiers do for hours) for some seconds at the start of the race. In this phase the weight of the skiers is fully onto 1 ski so skins slide sucking energy. Also: the resulting movement is very different from a normal walking on flat land, since the shape of the binding connected to ski prevents the ankle from doing its normal movement, compelling the inexperienced athlete to do an anomalous movement. Since this is the first and more evident fact, we spend on this some more words to explain how this big modification from what nature evolve in several thousand years cost 30% more energy in walking skis at feet (with old bindings, of course !). © Maruelli sas - all right reserved © Maruelli sas - all right reserved | fe Natural Walking Bindings REVOLUTION a sanding INYOLUTION Standing JOD. ie Unnniead cena (szain volute areas ‘carter FO oad NWB NWP NAT ao hme Someta flat feet (legs oscillation) Toe pushed down Free TOE! (Toe down) . {again) unnaturally {les cam make the oscillation ) Fig.3 locked by bindings. In Fig.3 you can see how the human gait evolve, and how it “involve” due to the known skialp bindings. The reason of this unnatural position is clear: the tip-toe cannot rise so the skiers must adapt his body to this limitation. The first think that are clear in the “ULUC” gait are: - Center fo gravity too ahead and very low = Very short gait - Head bowed lower ~ Lot of wast energy due to the ankles unnatural movement and skin sliding under skier’s weight. In Fig.4a & 4b we try to show better the reason © Marvell sas - allright served of this unnatural movement from the first gait: come off, - Since toe-tip must rest at the ground => we have to do a complicated and unnatural - Since bones cannot lengthen and joints don’t —_series of actions (from I to 4), as described. Fig.4b 2) basin rotation 1) lower C.G 3) bend your legs © Marvell sas - allright reserved \ 4) open ankle Our thought is to put our leg forward without raising our foot. Fig.3-4-5 puts in light that to pass from the static position to the first step we have to do a notable moving of our body: rotation, translation and lowering together with a remarkable rotation of our ankles, Therefore, to perform the “skialp walking” we have to put in place a complex series of rotations of joints at the same time: ‘A-rotate and traslate our pelvis (blue arrow), allowing for a great part of advancing, B — lowering our center of gravity (green arrow down) and at the same time: C- the motionless leg should bend down with rotations of three joints (hip, knee, ankle (red) with aremarkable effort since it still supports almost all the weight of the skier. D- A complicate movement of the lumbar vertebrae and the upper part of the body follows. So a very complex moving, tough... and just to do the first step! ‘After the first step, the following ones aren’t very different and less complicated since, as long as the speed is low and at a walking level (3-6 km/h) that is the common situation for an inexperienced skier to a racer one, it happens that: the center of gravity should necessarily remain lowered, with both legs alternatively bent and pushed forward, and always very shifted backward since is not possible to make longer gait due to the stifness of the boots and the fact that ankles move to the limits too, So “skiap walking” is the result of a continuous adaptation put in place by the skier to an unnatural, instable condition, that continuously breaks one of the fundamental principles of the dynamic stability of a moving system. Without presenting a detailed explanation, we can say that this stability is determined exaclty by the ‘opposite event: the barycentre of the moving body should be more advanced with respect to the point of application of forces onto the snow by the feet, so the arms and pools are highly involved to cooperate to the “traction”, as mokeys do. Fig.5 * The first movement of normal walking (lateral oscillation of the body), when ski at feet, is fully missed. Summing up: - the weight of the skier is always supported by the muscles and no more from the bones (has happen ih 5 F1 = static skin’s grip f2 = dinamic skin’s grip T= Skier Push force S= Sliding force on sl A1 = snow static wear A2= snow dynamic wear back feet ing foot So given the weight of the skier Q, in function of how much he slide ahead the front ski (1,2,3,4,5) we can calculate the vertical components on his feet. Since the head and the upper body go ahead sliding more and the CG position rest much close to the foreward ski there will be a limit to this movement since Given static skin's grip F1coefficient the maximum traction force on the back foot, is given by: T=Y1"F1 Given the dynamic skin’s wear f2 the sliding necessary traction S to slide the ski is: S=Y2*f1 © Maruelli sas - all right reserved Ewervelli Old technique gait force analisys www.n-w-b.com Stateas fixed the speed of the skier the force balance will see: For vertical components: Q=q1+q2= qi=¥1 q2=¥2 For components parallel to the snow: T=S Since, as seen into the picture, as much as the skler slide foreward the weight Q load more and more the front foot, so q2 rise, Suppose that the dynamic wear coef. £2 rise of a known function with speed, since speed is fixed, the dynamic wear coef. f2 value is known Than the maximum foreward position is the position where: T=S or Y2*f1=Y1*F1 This means that given F1 and 2 the maximum sliding leght L is fixed, and will not probably chenge lot if the weight of the skiers change, but will change lot if the skier will prone less. Another obvious concerning is that if the slope become more steep the vertical component of the weight Q on the rear feet (q1) rise, but at the same time the needs for more traction to be faster push skiers to be more prone, so this means that q1 fells. As seen onto steep slope with low skin’s grip F1 the skiers loose several time the rear ski so his only stable reaction point We won't prove nothing, for the moment. We would like just to prepare our readers to the fact that cross country sliding ski technique is good just for cross. country ski where F1 is very low since wax grips few and the traction comes from legs as fixed point, insthead of feet, but f2 is very very low too. With skins F1 is very big, but also f2 is big too, and finally the F1/f2 is much little than in cross country so it means that sliding in Ski Mountaineering is less efficient than in cross country skiing... But what we wanna say is, first, that sliding the Skins with all the weight of the skiers on for a lot of time is, in any case, a big energy loss. This won't signify that is better to lift the ski... just that we have to see how much weight will be onto the sliding skin, for how many seconds and at witch speed, since f2 is normally much less than F1, but it will rise with rising speed... © Maruelli sas - all right reserved Natural Walkin Plate gait analisys onto the snow, in a Vertical Race www.n-w-b.com The Natural Walking Plate free your feet so you can easily walk or run Skis rest onto the snow and slide without the body load so consuming less energy.
