Choice of Timber on Strength Basis

1. For beam, rafters & floor joists: Use high bending strength and adequate stiffness
2. For column & posts: Use high compressive strength and adequate stiffness

SxS Designation - refers to how many sides have been pre-surfaced

S2S= surfaced two sides, S3S = surfaced three sides and S4S = surfaced four sides.

Dressed dimension (dD)

a. For dimensions 4 inches or less, dD = dN - 3/8"
b. For dimensions greater than 4 inches, dD = dN - 1/2"

Sample Problem 1
Determine the dressed dimensions of the following:
A. 2"x 6" S2S Lumber
B. 2"x 4" S4S Lumber

Solution:

Unit Measurement
Boardfoot - a volume unit used for timber measurement
1 BF = 12"x 12"x1" = 144 in3

Sample Problem 2
Calculate the total cost of a Narra tree 0.6 m diameter, 8.5 m high if its unit cost is 120 pesos per
BF.

Timber Adjustment Factors

1. Preservative Treatment
- No adjustment if treated with preservative treatment
2. Fire-resistant Treatment
- No adjustment if treated with fire-retardant treatment
3. Temperature
- No adjustment if temperature <66 degrees C
4. Moisture Content (See table in the NSCP 2015)
5. Duration of loads

Sample Problem 3
Calculate the required area for the given parameters for the design of timber.
DL = 160 kN
RLL = 135 kN
WLL = 20 kN
Class C Apitong
Not kiln dried
No preservative treatment
No chemical preservative

Anticipated load combinations:

1. DL only

2. DL + RLL

3. DL + WL
Material: Apitong Class C

1. Not treated with preservative treatment, Adj = 0.90

2. No chemical treatment, Adj = 0.95
3. Dry Timber (MC <19%), Adj = 1.00
4. Normal Temperature, Adj = 1.00
5. Duration of Load
