The need for pretested welding procedures that are supported by adequate test data and that satisfy the technical requirements for the commonly used construction codes and specifications has heen expressed by many individuals and organizations. The purpose of a welding procedure qualification is to provide test data for assessing the properties of a weld joint. This Standard Welding Procedure Specification for Naval Applications is an outgrowth of the coordinated work of the Welding Procedures Committee of the Welding Research Council, the AWS B2 Committee on Procedure and Performance Qualfieation, and a Task Group of this committe that included the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and representatives of the shipbuilding industry. The Welding Procedures Committee provided the test data documented by a Summary of Procedure Qualification Records. This SWPS-N was prepared by adapting AWS B2.1-1- (016 include requirements from NAVSEA Technical Publication $9074-AQ-GIB-010/248, Reguirements for Welding dnd Brazing Procedure and Performance Qualification, and other relevant fabrication documents. ‘The welding terms used in his specification shall be interpreted in accordance with the definitions given in the latest edi tion of AWS A3.0M/A3.0, Standard Welding Terms and Definitions Including Terms for Adhesive Bonding, Brazing, Soldering, Thermal Cutting, and Therma Spraying. Welding symbols shall be those shown in the latest edition of AWS A24, Standard Symbols for Welding, Brazing, and Nondestructive Examination. ‘The AWS B2 Committee on Procedure and Performance Qualification was formed in 1979 to provide welding standards conceming the subject of qualification. The primary document developed by this committee is AWS B2.1/B2.1M. Specification for Welding Procedure and Performance Qualification. This document established the foundation and framework for Standard Welding Procedure Specifications (SWPSs). The Task Group on Standard Welding Procedure Specifications for Naval Applications was formed in 2009 to address the need for SWPS-N documents that support the requirements of NAVSEA Technical Publication $9074-AQ-GIB-010/248 and fabrication requirements for naval applications Comments and suggestions for the improvement of this standard are welcome. They should be sent to the Secretary of the AWS B2 Committee on Procedure and Performance Qualification, American Welding Society. $669 NW 36 St, 4# 130, Miami, Florida, 33166. The subcommittee reviews the inquiry and the proposed reply t0 determine what the response 10 the inquiry should be. Following the subcommittee's development of the response, the inquiry and the response are presented to the entire committe for review and approval. Upon approval by the commit tee, the interpretation is an official interpretation of the Society, and the secretary transmits the response to the inquirer and (o the Welling Journal for publication, A4, Publication of Interpretations Al official interpretations will appear in the Welding Journal and will be posted on the AWS web site AS. Telephone Inquiries ‘Telephone inquiries to AWS Headquarters concerning AWS standards should be limited to questions of a general nature ‘or to matters directly related to the use of the standard. The AWS Board Poliey Manual requires that all AWS staff mem- bers respond to a telephone request for an official interpretation of any AWS standard with the information that such an interpretation can be obtained only through a written request. Headquarters staff cannot provide consulting services. However, the staff can refer a caller to any of those consultants whose names are on file at AWS Headquarters A6. AWS Technical Committees ‘The activites of AWS technical committees regarding interpretations are limited strictly to the interpretation of provi- sions of standards prepared by the committees or to consideration of revisions to existing provisions on the basis of new data or technology. Neither AWS staff nor the committees are in a position to offer interpretive or consulting services on (1) specitic engineering problems, (2) requirements of standards applied to fabrications outside the seape of the docu ‘ment, or (3) points not specifically covered by the standard, In such eases, the inquirer should seek assistance from a com. petent engineer experienced in the particular field of interest.
