In the various organizational setting, change is a necessity for growth even though, not all
change processes bring about improvement. The change process in education, therefore,
refers to an alteration of the institution’s environment structure, technology, or people
(Robbins & Delenzo (2001:230). This also implies that the change process in education refers
to the way an educational institution may alter its practices in order to improve its outcomes.
Change as it is defined does not happen overnight or a straightforward improvement in its
outcomes, but however, it comes with some challenges that need to be resolved in order for
the right change to be accomplished. The following are some of the challenges of the change
process in education.

Fear of the Unknown: Very more than often, people in an institution may seem to be
skeptical about what the new change might result in and hence may not be willing to accept
such changes because of the fear of what they don’t know might happen in the process of the
change. Such people are very okay with the old system of doing things and they see the
change to be something that may not end up well with them and hence will stand firm to
oppose it.

Lack of information: Communication is very key in regards to the change process of

education. Agents of educational change need to have adequate and accurate information
about the process of the change as well as understand it in order for them to comprehend and
accept the change. Lack of information and proper communication channels make it very
difficult for the aims of the change process to be achieved.

Reluctance to Experiment: The change process in education comes with the process of
learning new ideas and things Fullan (1992:22). Thus, it is concerned with learning to do and
learning to understand something new. This implies that the unwillingness to experiment with
the change coupled with the fear of failure prevents stakeholders as well as agents to put the
change into practice by experimenting with the change may lead to the inability to achieve
the aims of the change.

To conclude, the change process in education is key for the growth of education but however,
change comes along with some challenges that have to be resolved in order to achieve the
aims of the change.
