Be sure to wash and dry your Osnaburg prior to beginning. This is very important so you remove the “finish” from the fabric, General doll directions: Be sure to lay your body and head patter pieces on the stretch of the ‘osnaburg fabric as indicated on the pattern pieces. This is very important in shaping the head and body properly. Find the stretch by grasping the fabric in your hands, approximately 3 inches apart and pulling in opposite directions. Do this both ways s0 you can see which direction has more give or stretch. Trace arms, legs and body onto double thickness of Osnaburg fabric. Machine stiteh on tracing lines leaving open where indicated on pattern. Cut out to within 1/4” of stitch line, clipping curves and comers. Tum arms right side out. Stuff arms to within 1/2” of the stitching line. Bring seams together to meet and then machine stitch across where indicated on patter pieces. Put a tiny bit of stuffing in the tops of the arms, machine stitch across the tops with ‘a zig zag stitch to keep the osnaburg from fraying. Legs: Bring ‘seams together at end of foot to meet in middle. Using diagram as a guide, pencil in the line for the end of the foot. Machine stitch on the line. Stuff remainder of legs, machine stitch across the tops with a zig zag stitch to keep the osnaburg from fraying, Body/bottom: To form, at comer, bring together side and bottom seams to meet. This will form point. Machine stitch across the bottom, 5/8” in from the point to form one side of the box bottom. Repeat for the other side/point. Trim off points to within %" of stitch line. Refer to the diagram for additional help. Cut a slit thru one thickness of the body where indicated on the pattern and turn right side out. Fill bottom of body with % cup of weighting pellets or kitty litter. Stuff body and neck firmly. Hand stitch the slit closed, You may not be able to completely close the slit but that is okay. Treat that area with either fray check or rub some tacky glue over the raw edges/stitching to keep it from fraying. Cuta strip of osnaburg to fit over this area and either glue it or hand stitch it over the slit. Cut out four head sections from Osaburg fabric. On each section, machine stitch using a zig zag stitch just inside the flat edge of each section. This will help deter fraying. You may opt to treat the very edges with Fray Check instead. If you are using Fray Check, be sure to just do the edges as you won't want it to interfere with your staining. Machine stitch one pair together along one curved side using a 14” seam allowance. Repeat with the remaining pair. Now, pin the pairs together and machine stitch them around. Before you turn the head right side out, spritz it with a water bottle. You will want the fabric damp. Tum right side out and spritz it once again. You will want to keep your head damp throughout the stuffing process. This will help to take out any wrinkles at the seams and it will shrink slightly when drying and therefore, tighten up the head a bit. Begin stuffing by putting a good amount of polyfil into the center of the head. Firmly stuff head. Stuff section by section. I push stuffing into the inside of one section, then I move to the seam of that section. ‘Then push ‘more polyfil into the middle of the next section, then again along the inside seam line of that section. I work around the head this way, stuffing as I go. You may find that the middle center of the head needs more stuffing. If you head is too flat on top, take a 34" wide, flat end wooden dowel and push stuffing up into the center of the head to the top. (I will be offering these on my site for sale) Keep stuffing your head until it is firm and round. Sometimes if it is off. bit, I simply roll it in my hands as if | were rolling a ball of clay. ([ also have the stuffed heads for sale on my site) Position head onto neck, Push the neck up into the head hole a bit. Hand stitch head to neck around. Lightly pencil onto the head your face markings. Using two strands of black embroidery floss, hand stitch brows, eyes, lashes and mouth. Stitch nose and center of mouth using two strands of red embroiderly floss. Pencil the shoes on to the feet. Use the shoe template. Pin it to the top of the foot making sure to line up the lines with the seam. Now trace around the template. This will be the open top boundary of your shoe. Pencil the rest of the shoe (strap) Paint the shoes black and allow to dry. Now, paint alternating stripes of Bam Red and Antique white leg stripes on each leg. Allow to dry. Mix together instant coffee with warm water. Apply to doll using a sponge brush. If you used kitty litter to weight the doll, avoid getting that area wet. Allow to dry or speed it up by placing in the oven set at 210 degrees F. Line the cookie sheet with paper towels and then a top sheet of parchment paper. Place your doll parts on top of that. This will help to reduce scorch marks. Check often and turn parts. Sand lightly entire doll. Now, hand stitch doll hair to head. It will be much easier to do this if you do not have to work around the arms and legs! Cut 3” lengths of wool or yarn. Tie them in to bundles of two in the middle. You will need MANY of these to cover the entire head. Begin at one side of the front of the head and hand stitch the bundle to the head at the knot. Work your way up around along the front of the face. Space your bundles about 14” apart. Fill in the back ofthe head. Hand stitch arms and legs to doll where indicated on pattern piece. Position this piece right over the front of Andy’s chest at the neck line. Pin to Andy. Hand stitch to Andy at the two points. This is the striped fabric that is under his collar on the front of his chest. Refer to the picture. Cut out sailor collar from double thickness of fabric. Right sides together, machine stitch (BE SURE to use a 1/8” seam allowance) leaving open where indicated. Clip comers/curves, tum right side out.
