What is
Etymology?
You can get entire degrees in
etymology. If you take a
linguistics course, be
prepared to have to write an
entire paper just on the
study of one word and how it
changes over time. See my
etymology paper on the
word “ghost.”
Is there a simpler definition of
Etymology?
Etymology is the study of the origin of words. It also
discusses how the meaning of these words have changed
over time, or a period of time, in their simple and/or
complex forms.

Etymology focuses on understanding the word root.

What I Added for the July 2022 Edit
1. Two slides added with better layout for explaining etymology, taking presenter

notes and adding that information to the slides for the students to see themselves,
instead of depending on the instructor. This aids for students who miss the Zoom
class and need to catch up on their own time.
2. One etymology graphic resized and put back into a different slide layout, for the

above reasons.
3. One slide with the screenshot from my phone edited, frame added, and description

added.
Why did I add/edit these elements?
Symmetry: for ease in decoding (p. 61)

Adjustment of irregular white space (p. 50)

Scale and spatial concerns, for visual learners (pp. 186, 197)

Improve overall visuals for comprehension (p. 255)
