COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will follow the Colorado Academic Standards for Visual Art for High School.
The student will. . .
 Standard 1: Observe and Learn to Comprehend
o Utilize the inquiry method of observation and the language of visual art and
design to gather information and determine meaning.
o Interpret, analyze and explain the influence of multiple contexts found in
visual art and design.
o Use artmaking processes as forms of inquiry to increase independent
reasoning and perception skills to increase knowledge.
 Standard 2: Envision and Critique to Reflect
o Use criteria and personal discernment to evaluate works of art and design,
taking into consideration the variables that influence how the work is
perceived.
o Articulate a personal philosophy of art, understanding various philosophies
that have come before.
o Examine the nature of diverse aesthetic experiences to build a language of
representation that can be used to respond to the world.
 Standard 3: Invent and Discover to Create
o Establish a practice of planning and experimentation to advance concepts
and technical skills.
o Ideate and build works of art and design to demonstrate growth and
proficiency in traditional and new art media.
o Articulate and demonstrate that the making and study of art and design can
be approached from a variety of perspectives.
 Standard 4: Relate and Connect to Transfer
o Research and analyze the ways visual artists, designers and scholars express
personal views and beliefs and how these perspectives have a social context
that enlarges the meaning of an artwork beyond the individual maker.
o Develop proficiency in visual communication skills that extends learning to
new contexts.
o Utilize the practice of artmaking, and research historical and cultural
contexts, to discern between different viewpoints, critique social problems
and effect social change.

 Watercolor Painting
High School Painting
 Acrylic Painting
 Final Project – Portfolio Piece

STUDENT SUPPLIED MATERIALS


Watercolor Set
3 Round watercolor brushes – sizes 4, 2, & 1
2 Flat watercolor brushes – sizes 8, 6
Sketchbook
Watercolor pad
Pencils: HB, 2B, 4B
+Optional: 8B or 7B pencil

(Optional: The student may bring in a paint shirt to wear during art class.)

GRADING
CECW does not consider grades lower than 70% passing; we do not assign D’s as a grade.
Final grades .5% or less away from the grade level above will be rounded up.
Letter grade Percentage
A 90 – 100%
B 80 – 89%
C 70 – 79%
F 69% and below: Unsatisfactory

*Studio Projects
Each Studio Project will be assigned a letter grade {A, B, C, etc. . .} These projects will be
worth 60 points. Components of these projects will vary. Planning/process/research will
always be taken into consideration when assessing studio projects.
- Note: Research projects may be added in addition to Studio Projects. In general,
these projects will be worth 10-20 points.

** Final Portfolio Project


This final semester project will be worth 120 points (double a regular studio project.)

**Homework
Homework will vary depending on the unit. It is used to reinforce classroom learning,
practice skills, and prepare for the next lesson. For the purpose of this course, homework
will mainly consist of Weekly Progress Checks and information-gathering assignments.
These assignments will bolster the student’s art content knowledge as well as develop a
crucial part of the artistic process.

***Effort grade – Studio Citizenship


Attendance, being on time, coming prepared for class, and actively participating in
classroom discussions and activities are all part of the Effort/Studio Citizenship grade.
High School Painting
There will be 1-5 Studio Citizenship points possible for each class (5-25 per week.)
These points will be awarded if the student is present and actively participating in class.
Critiques (individual or group evaluations of their art/artistic process) are included in
the Studio Citizenship grade. On weeks with a critique, students will have the
opportunity to earn 5 extra points in this category.

LATE WORK
If a student is absent on the day an assignment is due, he or she may turn in the assignment
at the start of the next class period. For every day absent, one additional day will be added
to the due date.
If a student does not complete an assignment on time, he or she will lose 10% of the
possible points each day an assignment is late. Students will not receive credit after 10 days
or the end of the unit, whichever comes first.

CLASSROOM RULES

Studio Citizenship:
Take good care of the art supplies that you use. At the end of each class clean your
workspace. Throw away trash and wipe down your table. Clean out your brushes and
containers and put away any materials that you have used.

Art Supply Check Out:


Some art supplies may be available for checkout. You must make a request to Ms. Faour
before taking any art supplies out of the classroom. If Ms. Faour gives permission for
supply checkout you are required to sign and date the supply checkout sheet and list the
supply type and the number of supplies that you are checking out. If any supplies are lost,
stolen, or damaged, you will be responsible for the reimbursement/replacement of those
supplies.

All existing CECW rules and policies will apply and be enforced in this class. All CECW
Policies are available on our website.

TEAMS GUIDELINES/INFORMATION

CECW Students are expected to utilize Teams for all their classes. All of the standard CECW
rules and policies, as well as Art room guidelines still apply in the TEAMS Art room.
Students will be expected to turn in Weekly Progress Check assignments as well as other
assignments via TEAMS for credit. TEAMS should be checked regularly as important
assignments and information will be posted via TEAMS.

Note: This syllabus is subject to change. If any changes are made on the syllabus, the revised
version will be posted on the website.
