PROBLEM STATEMENT

Measuring the rate of discharge of simple battery cell.

OBJECTIVES

1. Calculate and measure the rate of discharge of battery.

2. Finding the best combination of electrolyte and metal strips for the lowest rate of discharge.

Materials

 200 mL 1 M aqueous copper (II) sulfate

 200 mL 1 M aqueous zinc sulfate
 200mL 1M aqueous iron sulfate
 2 strip zinc metal
 2 strip copper metal
 2 strip iron metal
 2 150-mL beaker

Method

1. Built a Daniel Cell battery using copper and zinc strip.

2. Measure the initial voltage at time=0
3. Monitor the voltage for every minute and record the changes in voltage until the voltage goes to
zero.
4. Using mathematical calculate the rate discharge of the simple cell.
5. Repeat the experiment using different combination of metal strips.
