CORE CONCEPT
This movie focuses on Hiccup’s friendship with his supposed to be enemy a dragon named
Toothless.
LOGLINE
The story takes place in a mythical Viking world where a young Viking teenager named Hiccup
aspires to follow his tribe's tradition of becoming a dragon slayer. After finally capturing his first
dragon, and with his chance at last of gaining the tribe's acceptance, he finds that he no longer
wants to kill the dragon and instead befriends it.
THEME
Watching the blooming of the friendship of Hiccup and Toothless is one of the most amazing
things I saw on the screen. In the beginning, they are both frightened shitless, but the serene
kindness of Hiccup opens Toothless to the possibility of a Viking friend. We watch them defend
each other and support each other, though the stakes are high. It's all about working together.

DEMOGRAPHIC
How To Train Your Dragon’ is a delightful heart-warming kids movie that parents are bound to
also enjoy. The twists and turns of the plot allow the story to seem a little bleak and hopeless at
times before revealing the happy ending and so the film may not necessarily be appropriate for
very little kids due to the emotive nature of these scenes. On the other hand it brings a well
roundedness to the movie which should help appeal to slightly older kids. As this film is definitely
aimed at a young audience, any concern about potential upset should be taken away as soon as
the direction of the story is made clear. We feel that ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ should be
appropriate for kids aged 6 and over although it may be advisable for an adult to be present for
the first watch in case any reassurance is required during the possible distressing scene where
Toothless is captured by the Vikings.
PARADIGM
Act 1
Young Viking named Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III son of Stoick the Vast.
His father leader of the Viking island of Berk. Although initially dismissed as a clumsy and
underweight misfit.
he soon becomes renowned as a courageous expert in dragons, beginning with Toothless, a
member of the rare Night Fury breed as his flying mount and his closest companion.
PLOT POINT
Hiccup finds in the forest the Night Fury he has knocked down, but is not able to kill
him. Most important, he realizes he’ll never be able to kill a dragon.
Hiccup touches Toothless for the first time and their friendship begins. Hiccup
decides he will secretly work to make Toothless fly again.
Hiccup is forced by his father Stoick to attend the young Vikings training to slay
dragons, which is exactly the last thing he wants to do at the moment.
ACT 2
MIDPOINT
he first flight of Hiccup and Toothless together: they can fly only together as a whole.
A big success for both.
Thanks to all the things he’s learning from Toothless, Hiccup is the best of his class
and wins the “honor” to kill a dragon in front of the whole village.
The truth blows up in the face of Hiccup: in the arena he refuses to kill a dragon,
Toothless comes to save him and is thus discovered and captured. The lie is now out
in front of everybody and Hiccup is disowned by Stoick. As Astrid says in the movie,
he’s lost everything: his best friend, his father, his tribe.
ACT3
CLIMAX
Hiccup makes a plan to free Toothless and save his tribe from the Queen Dragon. He
teaches the other young Vikings to ride dragons and they leave Berk together to reach
the battlefield.
Riding Toothless, who has been freed by a very remorseful Stoick, Hiccup defeats the
Queen Dragon at the risk of his own life. Big, heroic final battle.
ENDING
The Queen Dragon is killed, the tribe is safe, Stoick recognizes the value of Hiccup,
the Vikings learn that dragons are gentle and loyal creatures, Toothless and Hiccup
live together happily ever.
