1. DESCRIPTION
The Earth Leakage Relay RD is a microprocessor base electronic
protection device designed to recognize low level leakage or
Unbalanced currents, due to insulation loss on conductors oF
equipment to be protected.
The fundamental feature ofthe RD is to allow preventive contol
‘of the system's insulation with continuous display of the earth
Teakage current value of motors, transformers and power systems.
The meas of the leakage currents is obiined by the use of a
ringype current transformer. All cireuit conductors to be
‘protected shall go through the CT
The RD product family includes:
RD-7 panel mounting telay 72X72
RD-9 panel mounting relay 96x96
D-1 modular 35mm DIN rail
For more info go to the Technical Features paragraph and read the
installation instructions.
‘The RD family relays present the following features:
* Dircet digital display ofthe earth leakage current
* Digital display of the fault current percentage value of the
‘sipping.
‘+ Indipendent curent adjustments for alarm and tripping from
003A w 10.A,
indipendent time adjustments for alarm and tripping from 003
05 Secs
‘Control of two operational relays: alarm relay (Alarm) and
‘ripping relay (Trip).
+ One digital input for exteral reset (only RD-1 model).
“Indication and sorage, in @ nom volatile memory, of the last
trip's fault current,
“+ Manual test of output slays displays and leds
* Local or automatic programmable reset. The aulomatic rest is
Tocked out after 3 trips within 9 minutes time.
+ Continuous control of CT wiring connection
‘Thanks fo the digital HMI itis pombe to easily and precisely st
the time and current values.
The RD relay, thanks to it intemal filtering, is immune to external
disturbances. is function is also guaranteed ‘with altemate
sinusoidal and continually pulsating differential curents, abruptly
‘or applied which rise slowly (ype A)
2. INSTALLATION
The RD should be installed according the characteristics of
Inumidity and temperature tht has been designed to work i. To.
minimize noise pickup and interference the relay should be placed
away fiom high current conductors or sources of strong magnetic
fies
The Gieuit conductors shll be placed in the center ofthe ring type
‘eure teaneformer (as showed in the Ge)
‘Should the cables have a wide section and should they carry high
levels of curet, avoid to place the single conductors fr from the
‘enter ofthe ring. In this case it wil be necessary that the diameter
fof the Current Transformer shall be wider than the minimum
necessary diameter.

The RD-1 is design tobe installed over a din
sail of 35mm _(go to last page), while the RD-T and the RD
Ihave been stndiod for panel mounting
3. ELECTRICAL WIRING CONNECTIONS
Fellow the digram on the last page.
tention: Do not work on active circuits! The following
points wil explain with more details:
3.1 Power Supply
‘Terminals 1 and2:115 Vac + 10%, -15% 50/6042
‘Terminals I and 3:230 Vac + 10% -15%, S0/6OH
note: KD does nt have intemal fas,
important: Before doing the diclecric strength test of panel
board, where the RD relay is installed, itis necessary to disconnect
it from the power line voltage
3.2 CT connection
‘The terminal blocks 10 and 11 should be connected to the
measuring windings of the CT by twisted cable. The used wire
should not be less than 1 mm: and the distance should be as shor
1s possible (max. 10 mt of pir wire).
NOTE: The CT wiring should be placod away from high current
conductors or sources of stemg magnetic Fields, o minimize noise
pickup and interference on the RD relay. Ifthe wires have only
fone route, separate the wires with some metallic element IF
shielded cables are used connect shield only to system ground
3.3 Output contacts connections
‘The oupits consist of two mechanical relays with ane changeover
‘contact. The TRIP relay will sctvate when the earth leakage
‘curent overcome the trip threshold for the specified delay time or
in caso of problem with CT connection (sce programing)
The ALARM relay will activate instantancously when the RD is
‘connected to line power, andi wll be deactivated when
‘= The earth leakage current overcome the alarm threshold for the
specified delay time
+ The auxiliary voltage is out off.
+ Problem with the CT connection (se programming)
NOTE: Using the contacts for control of inductive loads in
Vac (cols of relays, contactors, solenoids), is necessary to limit
the over current, or place a R/C group in parallel to the
Inductor. It works in DC, a diode in anti-parallel should be
‘connected. The Internal relays are isolated 5 kV between
‘contact and eal
3.4 External reset wiring (only RD-1 model)
‘Connect terminals 12 4 13 to dry contact (see wiring diagram

4, FUNCTIONS AND SIGNALIZATIONS.
Each time the RD relay is powered, an intemal check-up is made
inside of the relay. The protection function will be available
‘within 300ms and the DISPLAY will start displaying the eurent
levels in Ampere (normal functioning condition ater 5s.
"Note: Inthe ease there isa wire interruption inthe connection, the
message" EO" will appear on the display
DISPLAY:in the (3) digit display, the user can abserve all the
data of the RD: current levels, settings values and eror codes.
“ALARM” LED The "ALARM" Ted timed on shows thatthe
current has risen above the alarm setpoint and the programmed
time. The respective contact bas activated the alarm,
TRIP" LED: The "TRIP" led turned on shows that the cureat
has risen above the tip setpoint and the programmed tip time
The respective contact has activated the tip.
