SCIENTIFIC LIGHTNING RODS of KEC ON AGAINST DIRECT LIGHTNING STROCKES fection of structures, persons or objactsa Lighting protection System (L.P'S)is needed, which attracts the lighting stroke 7 eins currents toearth ‘Among the structures which require a LPS are buildings, open areas accessible to the public, structures which are dangerous to the environment due tothe possible emission of contaminated substances, historical buldings, et. ‘The following systems are curently used forthe extornal protection agains lighting: ‘SINGE ROD AIR-TERMINATION WIREAIR-TERMINATION MESHAIR-TERMINATION SYSTEM: Thelighiningrodislocated «SYSTEM: The protection is formed by «SYSTEM: The system consists of higherthan anyotherpointofthe area -—«onearmore.air-wireslocatad abovethe several capturing points connected (or structure to be protected, and its installation orarea tobe protected. This way the systom achioves to attract thelighining fash and to raise the strike point to attitude higher than the siructure tobe protected. The effectis that a large protection areals created than obtzinedwith standardlightaing rods. In the figure it can be seen thatthe protection area obtained with this system is much larger than that obtained with other protection devices, so that with a single capturing element the protection of buildings and installations with large size.can be achioved, lighting rod of ype KEC s not ikea singe capturing point ofa mesh ar-termination system, but rather ike all these capturing points which would be needed to protect the area. An important cast saving can be achieved due tothe saving of materials such as the ‘number of down-conductors, earth terminations, equipotential bonding, et. “The system also offers advantages compared o other sysiemsn the protection of pen areas.as spor fields etc ‘As a consequence the KEC system has several important advantages and a redued cost compared to other passive capturinng systems, SCIENTIFIC LIGHTNING RODS of KEC EFFECTIVE FEEDING DEVICE ‘ADVANTAGES Inthe instant when a lightning fash goes to earth a discharge on any raised structure is produced, Passive protection systems such as a mesh air-termination system only capture the the discharges wich the protected structure would receive, due tothe lack of a capturing system which attracts the lightning stroke. The feeding device of type KEC releases electrical discharges tothe air in order to create a dischange path for the lightning stroke assuring this way an improved offcioncy inthe capturing of lighting. ® NOT RADIOACTIVE WORKING PRINCIPLE By means ofthe feeding devices, the system emits a high voltage signal with a certain frequency and amplitude. Its efficiency is. obtained by ereating an up-going path up to the down-going path ofthe lighining stroke. This way a sirking point on an attitude higher than the protected structure is created which increases the radius of the protected area if compared with a standard lightning ro. ENERGY AUTONOMY The feeding device does not need any auxliary power supply such as other lightning capturing systems, The KEC obtains the energy for the generation of the high vollage signal from the electro-magnetic field which is automaticaly created during thunderstorms (between 10t020KVim), The values determined inthe tests correspond to average values. These values are evaluated in the standards NF C 17 - 102 or in UNE21 188 according othe rancom nature oflghtning, SCIENTIFIC LIGHTNING RODS of KEC CALCULATION & SELECTION OF KEC MODEL The radius of protection is calculated as following standard (NF C 17-102 and UME 21186) h - h? + AL (2D + AL) Rp : protection radius “ oy h: height from referred protection plan to KEC (5m < h < 60m} D : a parameter that takes the different values depending on the protection level D = 20m for Level | (for area with very high risk of lightning) D = 45m for Level II (for area with high risk of lightning) fo D= 60m for Level III for area with normal risk of lightning) AL: virtual height of upward leader achieved upon the conductor: AL = VxAt where V is the streamer velocity of propagation (~Tm/s). At average gain in time of upward leader emission and taken from KERI test report : + If the protected structure is higher PROTECTION RADIUS (Rp) - (M) 2m and under 5m, the protection radius is followed the selection table. % If the protected structure is higher 5m and under 60m, the protection radius is calculated in compliance with above NF C 17-102 and At (11s) of laboratory test result i > If the protected structure is higher than 60m, the angle 15 degrees side strike safety deviation from 60m heights of structure willbe considered. 8\8/a}8/3|a|s|e/3|a/3| KOREA ELECTRIC COMPANY LTD. 52, Jang Sa-Dong, Jong No-Ku Seoul 110-430, Korea eCmo Niele aseeren iT CONG TY TNHH KY THUAT BIEN V.T.E.C.H Soe Ree CH een an eS www.vtech-electric.com “Foie: ‘ules nine a's yp HOE Ch ee a with your success Ema ecwlerviewnen.vonvi-sues@ectreleiiccom Maly Mrbaneh@vtechreet
