Problem Statement – Healthcare Workforce

Nursing care has been mentioned in the Indian culture from the times of the Vedas. However,
according to World Health Organization, the nursing workforce in India is still underkilled &
insufficient to meet the needs. In India, there is a need to train approximately a million nurses
to meet the current shortfall of skilled health workers in the country. Further, nursing education
faces challenges, such as streamlining nursing education, enriching the curriculum,
strengthening faculty development and increasing the use of International innovative teaching
and learning techniques.

Experts say in India, some of the main issues related to qualified nurse still remain to be tackled
– outdated knowledge, Lack of effective communication and learning techniques, low morale
and lack of a leadership skills at work environment. Nursing is more than taking temperature,
blood pressure and assisting in feeding, bathing along with other activities, Nursing training and
education must be sound and should be entirely outcome-oriented based on desired clinical
competencies.
Nurses need to work on broader horizon and should try to become an entrepreneur so that they
can work in different areas with all their strengths to bring desired prestige and marked
contribution in health-care outcomes. There are many areas where nurses need to focus their
services and the first and foremost is 'nurse-led clinics' which is best for clients with chronic
illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and palliative care. Adjuvant nurse-led clinics along with
physicians are successfully implemented in Western countries and we have enough data to
support this but unable to implement because of endless reasons. Nurses are the head honchos
and lifeline of health-care organisations but still lack recognition. Concern on this has been
expressed by many, but till date, no strong recommendations and visible implementation of laws
and policies are seen. Nurses need to take leadership and proceed to participate more at higher
levels to bring a change in the existing scenario. Adaptation of nurses as a nurse practitioner
would not be easy, but it will definitely bring the pride and honour which every nurse desire for.
Collaborative working model of nurses and doctors with mutual respect would reflect positively
on the health outcomes of the country.

Nurses after graduation have little time to academically hone themselves further. Nursing school
education does not impart knowledge on the most current practices, facts and data available in
the nursing field. However, this information may quickly become outdated in the healthcare
setting because the healthcare field is constantly changing and progressing. Thus, there is an
urgent need for conducting training programs for undergraduate nursing students.

ISDC Proposal
ISDC can replicate its successful existing continuous nursing training model to all nursing
students of Karnataka. The training is spread over four years with a blended and continuous
learning approach. The International Certificate in Healthcare Practice (ICHP) program for
nurses is specifically imparted to welcome them commencing initial employment or to new
nursing roles they are going to take up in the hospital. It introduces the values and objectives of
the modern health care system so that they feel confident and equipped with knowledge. The
ultimate outcomes of International Certificate in Healthcare Practice (ICHP) program is to
improve on Effective Communication, Leadership Skills and Professional Practice of Nursing
and thereby the care that is provided by registered nurses to patients.
We work with many Private /Deemed Universities in Karnataka for supporting their
Healthcare Education – it includes the brands like Manipal, NITTE, JAIN, Yenepoya,
Dayananda Sagar..etc. We have an ongoing MoU with Tamil Nadu Government on this
front.
