Activity 1.

Identify whether the following underlined word is British English or American


English by using the symbols BrE for British and AmE for American English. Write your
answer on the space provided.

Activity 2. Recall the three language registers, give a brief description about them,
including their use. Use the table on the next page.
Language Register Use/Function
1. Formal Formal register normally used when it comes to
speaking an unfamiliar person or speaking to a superior
in your office. Example, talking to your professor
regarding to your concern about her subject and a job
interview.
2. Informal Informal register used when you are talking to your best
friends, close friends, and family. It is somehow called
intimate and casual. Example, talking to your long-time
friend inside the mall, mocking your sister in a funny way
and being intimate to your love ones.
3. Neutral Neutral register is used when you are writing an essay,
articles, blog and etc. It is use when you are writing
factual essays about what happened in a certain
situation. It is impersonal and more objective type.
