Week: 1 and 2
Subject: Chemistry
Class: 10-1
Duration: 5 x 40 minutes
General Objective: Students will be able to calculate relative molecular mass, Relative formula
mass and relative atomic mass.
Specific Objectives: At the end of this lesson students will be able to:
Key Terms: Atomic, Mass, Molecular, relative, Avagadro's, Molar, Mass, Mole, Formula
Prior Learning:
Students will require a basic concept of Chemical Formulas and Mathematical transposition.
Students will also need to recall what the unit of measurement Mole is and what it measures.
Engagement:
Students will be allowed to recall and share knowledge the unit of measurement mole.
Students will also be asked to share what the unit mole measures and their understanding of
the concept.
Exploration:
Students will then be allowed to view the periodic table and read off the Relative Atomic Mass
as stated their. A guided discussion will then ensue about Relative Molecular, Formula, and
Atomic Masses (RFM, RMM and RAM)and what they represent.
Explanation:
Students will be informed of the difference between the RAM, RMM and RFM and how they are
calculated. Students will also be given a working definition for the term Mole and be introduced
to Avagadro's Constant.
Elaboration:
Students will be able to attempt questions in the calculation of RAM, RMM and RFM. Students
will also be asked at random intervals during the lesson to individually state Avagadro's
constant. Students will also be able to relate carbon-12 and its role in the mole concept.
Evaluation:
Students will be given an calculation activity to calculate RAM, RMM, RFM and Molar Mass
