1. Given that:
–74.8 kJ mol–1
The required reaction is the reverse of formation, so as we are going in the
opposite direction, it requires the opposite sign.
2. Calculate the ΔHf of methane (CH4 (g)), using the following ΔHC data:
CH4 (g) = –882 kJ mol–1; C (s) = –394 kJ mol–1; H2 (g) = –286 kJ mol–1
+ 2 O2 (g) + 2 O2 (g)
We want ΔHf which is the reaction going across the top (blue arrow). To get
there we go down the black arrow and back up the orange arrow. We travel in
the direction of the black arrow, but in the opposite direction for the orange
arrow.
+ 5 O2 (g)
3 C (s) + 4 H2 (g)
We want ΔHC which is the reaction going across the top (blue arrow). To get
there we go down the black arrow and back up the orange arrow. We travel in
the direction of the orange arrow, but in the opposite direction for the black
arrow.
+ 3 O2 (g) + 3 O2 (g)
We want ΔHf which is the reaction going across the top (blue arrow). To get
there we need to go down the black arrow and back up the orange arrow. We
travel in the direction of the black arrow, but in the opposite direction for the
orange arrow.
For this question we need to take a different approach. The ΔHr will be equal
to the total number of bonds broken minus the total number of bonds made
(as breaking bonds requires energy and making bonds gives out energy).
A C=O and an O–H bond are both made and broken, thus cancelling each
other out, so we get:
+12 O2 (g)
We want ΔHC which is the reaction going across the top (blue arrow). To get
there we go down the black arrow and back up the orange arrow. We travel in
the direction of both arrows.
