GOD’S CHARACTER AND DEEDS

Aim: To understand God’s character and deeds, we need to lay the fundation that the very
person of God can only be found and seen in Jesus. Anything that Jesus didn’t exhibit in his
earth walk, the father doesn’t exhibit same.

Central Truth: God’s character and deeds are such that are interrelated together. The latter is
the expression of His person while the former is what makes up His nature (His person). Jesus is
the exact representation of the father and that means, all that God is can be seen in Christ.
Therefore our subject or specimen for this teaching will be the person of Christ.

Memory verse: Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the
Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. James 1:17

Introduction

Philip, one of Jesus' disciple called Philip asked Him to show them the father. Let's read
the full text (John 14:8-14). Jesus responded by letting him know that the person that hath seen
and encountered him has seen the father. This implies that Jesus is He exact representation of the
father in acts and in deeds. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt amongst us… John 1:14”.
Therefore the only way to know who the father His, is by knowing the son and the only way to
know his character and deeds is by looking at the life of Jesus.

The writer of the book of Hebrews called him: “…the brightness of his glory, and the
express image of his person… Hebrews 1:1-3.” Whose glory and person? The Father. So we see
from here that the person of God is been revealed to us in the son, Jesus. Also, it’s imperative
that we understand and remind ourselves that the Godhead is three in one and One in three, i.e. 3
in personality and one in operation. This means that though they are of different personality,
their operation is done as one and none represent itself but the three.

What's the definition for the word character and Deed?

Character according to Collins dictionary 2008 edition is defined as your personality. It

was used this way "Your character is your personality". It is from the Greek word charaktér
meaning an impression, representation with its origin from the word charagma which is used to a
tool for engraving. So the character if God talks about his representation, that which makes his
person. It is what people see in the physical with which they draw conclusion as regards who a
person is.

Deed according to Collins dictionary 2008 edition is said to be something that is done;
whether good or bad. It is from the Greek word ergon, meaning an act, business or occupation. It
is from the root word ergo (to work). Therefore this explains to us that God's deeds is God's act,
his doing, his work. However, from our understanding of his character, we can say that his deeds
is what proceeds out from his character and that means that his deeds will not portrait what His
person doesn't depict.
