THE AFFECT OF LANGUAGE TO CULTURE AND SOCIETY

Language and culture are in coordination, with great equality. Masanobu in chaer
(1995:217) refers to culture and language asa system attached to humans. Or, in other words,
culture is a system attached to humanity-regulating human interaction in the community, so
language is a system that ACTS asa means by which such interactions take place. It has also been
discussed by this language and cultural relationship: d Bloomfield, Harris, and voegeli in oka
(1974:113) they believe that language when viewed from outside as an instrument and vessel of
culture in terms of language activity both in written form and in spoken form(Thomas, n.d.)

Language's relationship with culture is very close, and it is often difficult even to identify
relationships between the two because they influence one another, fill one another and walk side
by side. According to nababan (1993:82) there are two types of language and cultural relations,
that is (1) language is part of culture (filogenetics), and (2) a person learns culture through his
language (ontogenetics). The role of language in culture is described in sibrani (1992:101) to
three, which is (1) the empowering development tool (2) the cultural successor (3) inventory of
cultural characteristics.As a means of culture, it is seen that Indonesia's regional enactments are
conducted using Indonesian(Gullestrup, 2006)

As is understood by the recipient of culture, it can only be realized if it is understood,


understood, and upheld by the people who speak the language. It is even often stated that it is
possible where languages exist, for it is language that makes culture possible.On the other side of
the patterns of life, conduct, customs, and dress and other cultures may also be transmitted or
transmitted by language. Even ancestral culture is acceptable and we pass on to our children
through language. The ancestral culture contained in old texts, which may have been written
hundreds of years ago, is now available only because it is written within Language. Knowledge
as an integral culture we can convey to our students and grandchildren simply because it is
expressed in language. A new culture, in turn, can be conveyed and understood when such
cultures have names or terms. Its naming or styling is language. Every cultural demographic,
ranging from the smallest to the largest, is given a name or a term. In the process of cultural

learning and teaching, it is the name or term that is most needed. Naming an element of culture
as well as an inventory of it. An inventory of cultures can benefit cultural development in
particular as to the propagation, teaching and learning of culture.

A personal example I've encountered of how language affects culture and society is as we
call (lo, gue, kamu) to a bigger person when it's something we're used to when we call him by
that name. but since our culture often considers it to be something that is beneath our dignity,
And also if we call people without elder brother's name, Mr. And others it's considered rude.
Hence, the language we speak often becomes our culture.
