ABSTRACT OF THESIS

Cellular network operators must periodically optimize their networks to accommodate traffic growth
and performance degradation. Optimization action after service rollout is to correct the expected errors
in network planning and to achieve improved network capacity, enhanced coverage and quality of
service. This work presents the performance analysis methods for optimizing mobile cellular radio
network with respect to the CDMA 20001X. The various ways of ensuring that the radio parameters are
maintained at their standard thresholds after the optimization of the network to enhance the network
performance are equally presented.

When network capacity and coverage are not optimized, operators will spend a lot of money for very
little returns. This is due to the fact that, if lowly populated areas are over covered, there will be excess
resources not used; this means transmission channels will not be working at full capacity. This
constitutes a net waste in network resources. On the other hand, when densely populated areas are not
well covered, the number of transmission channels will not match the number of users. This is a
problem in the sense that there will be a lot of network failure hence users will not appreciate the
quality of service and will tend to abandon any operators providing such poor services.

We are going to realize that there is a certain amount of compromise that must be accepted during
optimization: one can not gain in capacity and coverage at the same time.

The method elaborated in this document is based on KPI analysis

As a recap, this work has been carried out under the topic: capacity and coverage optimization of the
cdma 2000 1x radio interface.
