Essay Writing Practice - PEOMI : Valentine

How does the poet present love in an unconventional way?

Answer in at least 3 PEOMI paragraphs.

The poet expresses love like an onion. This is shown at the second line, when the poet said that he
gives the audience an onion and describe it as "a moon wrapped in brown paper." and "It promises light
like the careful dressing of light". The imagery of the onion being like "a moon wrapped in brown paper"
reveal that the onion is like a moon, but blinded with brown paper, tells me that the onion that he is
referring to has a strong flavour. They have a greenish-white, light yellow, or white inside; its layers of
papery skin have a yellow-brown or pale golden colour. It is higher in sulphur content than the white
onion, which gives it a stronger, more complex flavour. The use of a simile compares the onion to "a
moon wrapped in brown paper" suggest that the colour of the onion is bright and brown, just like the
moon wrapped in brown paper as the moon reflects light from the sun. This makes me think that an
onion that the poet is talking about could be linked to a onion which has a stronger, a more complex
flavour than a regular onion.

The poet does not sugarcoat his words and love for the audience. This is shown at the eleventh line, when
the poet said that he is "trying to be truthful". And told the main audience that he would not give a "cute
card or kissogram", but an onion. The imagery of the poet giving the audience an onion instead of a "cute
card or kissogram" reveals that the author is straightforward and does not wish to sugarcoat his feeling to
her. But not writing a cute card or giving her a kissogram, he is aware that the audience knows him well
and would understand his straightforwardness well. This makes me think that the poet and his girlfriend
have already been dating for a long time and they know about each other well.
