Algebraic expressions In algebra, unknown numbers are represented by letters, These are called algebraic expressions. The letters are called variables. An example of an algebraic expression is 3x + 2. The value of an algebraic expression can vary depending on the values of the letter(s). They can be obtained by substituting the letter(s) with different values. This process is called substitution. For example, if x = 2, then the value of above expression is 8. We substitute x = 2 into the expression and work out the sum to get the value. Try substituting x with different values to get the corresponding values for the algebraic expression. Some points to note when writing algebraic expressions 1. In an algebraic expression which involves multiplication, we do not write the multiplication sign. For example, 3 x x is simply written as 3x. . In the product of a number and a letter, the number is written before the letter. For example, the product of 8 and y is written as 8y and not y8. In the product of 1 and a letter, the number 1 is not written. For example, 1 x z is written as z. 227 © Educational Publishing House Pte Lid UNIT 1: Algebra os A shopkeeper sold 8 kg of sugar on Monday and 4y kg on Tuesday. Speed Speed measures the amount of distance moved per unit of time. That is, it tells us how fast or how slowly an object is moving. If a vehicle travels at a uniform speed, this means that the speed of the vehicle is the same over an interval of time. The formula for calculating speed, given distance travelled and time taken is: Speed = Distance travelled + Time taken Note: If speed is in km/h, distance must be in km, time in hour. We can rewrite the formula to find distance travelled or time taken: Distance travelled = Speed x Time taken Time taken = Distance travelled + Speed ESL Ee | © Educational Publishing House Pte Ltd 7 143 ¢ UNIT 6: Time and Speed A car travels 210 km in 3 h.
