A closer look to multi-protocol principle
Device can communicate either over OMS V4 (OMS V3 compatibility)/EN13757 or over LoraWAN protocol
In the default configuration, on first water detection, the meter will start broadcasting WMBUS T1 frames
every 96 seconds.
Wireless WMBUS frames can be retrieved by a fixed infrastructure, or via walk or drive by systems. In open
field, this protocol can achieve a communication range of 2km. The WMBUS communication in T1 mode is
unidirectional, messages are broadcasted in the air and captured by a receiver if any with no impact on the
meter behaviour.
In normal WMBUS operations, the meter will try once per day (default setting) to connect to a LoraWAN
network. In that case the protocol used is bi-directional, which means the meter will get a feedback if the
LoraWAN network has accepted the connection, in this time we talk of “join accept”.
A “join accept” can occurs only if the device has been registered by an user into an application attached to
the LoraWAN network. Such a registration can be done only by the owner of the device and is secured by
two 128 bits unique keys.
If such a “join accept” is achieved, the meter will switch into LoraWAN mode: it will stop broadcasting
WMBUS T1 frames and will send Lora uplinks 2 times per day, at 6 AM and 6 PM UTC (default
configuration). LoraWAN modulation and protocol allow ranges up to 20 km, mainly on fixed networks.
If for any reason (device unregister from network, network down…) the communication to the LoraWAN
network is lost by the device, it will automatically switch back to default configuration : broadcast
WMBUST1 frames every 96 seconds and try to re-join a LoraWAN network once per day.
