proved to be "like nothing else on the earth".

Ang Dorjee was going to climb without oxygen. But because of this
his feet would get very cold. He thus wanted to avoid long
exposure (અનાવરણ) at heights and a night at the Summit Camp. He
had therefore either to get to the peak and go back to the South
Col the same day or abandon (give up) the attempt.
He was keen to start immediately and asked if I would like to go
with him. Going to the top from the South Col and back in a day
would be strenuous (full of activity which need lot of energy and
effort) and tough and there was the risk of Ang Dorjee turning back
if his feet got too cold. I, however, had full confidence in Ang

64. How the Environment can be Protected
Ans. We know that we can't save our environment overnight. But,
having an intention to make this possible is all that count. Reduce
wastage of papers. Try not to ruin plants. They are one of the
biggest factors that can keep the earth fertile and save the life.
Save trees to save our environment. Encourage your child to plant
trees in any empty ground. As I said before, the initiative counts. If
you feel the need of saving the environment, you will stop others
from doing something which can hurt the well being of the nature.
Save the environment by being a little close to the nature.
You can also make a large contribution by reducing the wastage of
electricity. Yes, in India the production of electricity is still
dependent on the non-renewable energy sources.
Switch off the light and fans when you don't need them.
Sometimes it's even great to enjoy the natural light and air. Allow
circulation of air and flow of light inside the home to save energy.
So we should try to save our environment by making the
small day to day initiatives. The first thing you should do is try to
save water, trees and electricity. This will make a big difference.
Also try to spread good words and educate children about it. Love
the nature to save the earth for our own future.

64. My Favourite National Leader
Ans. In fact, I love and respect all national leaders. Their good
qualities, work and ambition make them great. My favourite
National leader is Mahatma Gandhi.
Mahatma Gandhi is Father of the Nation. He was born on
October 2,1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat. He loved truth and justice
right from his childhood. He completed his school education in
Rajkot. Then he went to England and became a lawyer. He went to
South Africa as a lawyer. There he saw the injustice done to the
Black and White. He could not bear it so he fought against them
non-violently.
When Gandhiji returned to India, he became the leader of
our freedom movement. He lived like a poor man after noticing the
poverty of Indian people. He taught us to fight for our right against
the British Government. He gave courage and confidence to the
common man. He made Indian people fearless and started non-co-
operation movements. He gave us two powerful weapons - truth
and non-violence. He brought unity among the different castes of
people. Gandhiji was a very simple man. Moreover, he was a great
political leader, a social and a religious worker; he had great faith in
God and believed in truth and non-violence. He loved everyone so
people called him Bapu. He left us weeping and passed away on
January 30,1948.

64. Books our Best Friends
Ans. Good books enrich the mind by providing knowledge, by
widening the horizons of our imagination, and giving us an insight
into different minds. If a man is known by the company he keeps,
why should we not, then, keep the best company, that of good
books? Good literature entertains and instructs. It takes us on a
flight of fancy, away from our boring lives, to a place or country we
want to visit without having to pay for the passage. Pleasure
derived from external things like eating or sports are short-lived but
the pleasure that we derive from reading books is everlasting and
satisfying. Even after we have finished reading a book, we continue
to think about it and derive pleasure from it.
To derive maximum pleasure from reading we have to
gradually pass on from comics, detective novels, magazines and
simple storybook to good literature. Just like friends, the quality of
the books that we read also determines the kind of person we are.
Good books will enrich our personalities, read at least ten books
every year.

Speech:
65. Rohan is going to speak on the subject 'Love is more
powerful than Grudge and Hatred' in a school competition.
Write a speech in about 100 words on the same subject on his
behalf focusing on the following points.
Ans. Respected Chairperson of the debating club, dignitaries on
the dies and off the dies my loving brothers and sisters, first of all, I
take opportunity to wish you Happy Valentine's Day.
Bread, clothing and shelter are basic requirements but they
are only physical requirements. Even we keep a very sensitive and
costly machine in good condition by providing it functioning energy
a good cover and a suitable place to keep it. They are bread,
clothes and shelter in other forms. But man is not a machine. He
requires many emotions too. Love is such an emotion he needs
most. What gravity is in physics, love is in relationships. Hatred and
grudges dig holes, love and kindness as Abraham Lincoln said;
there are two ways of winning conquering by power and
conquering by love. The first thing is like building a dam or chaining
a lion. It may stop the water for a while. But once the dam will give
way, the water will flow with more fury. Whereas conquering by
love is like turning the lion into lamb by changing his nature.
Alexander the Great, Taimure Lung and Adolf Hitler used hatred
and power as weapon to conquer the world. They are forgotten
now. We remember Gandhiji and other leaders like him. Their
19
weapons were love and kindness. Not violence and hatred but non-
violence and love made England leave India and South Africa.
In nature also creative is the outcome of love, and
destruction is brought by anger. As Morari bapu said, truth, love
and compassion are universal elements and love is more powerful
than hatred and grudges.

Report:
66. You have witnessed a rescue operation by fire-fighters
saving people from a house on fire. Write a report in about 100
words on it focusing on the given points.
Ans. Fire accidents are not very common. But when they take
place they cause great alarms and destruction and sometimes loss
of life. After taking our food in the night, we went away into our
room. It was 9 o' clock in the night. Suddenly, we saw smoke
entering our room. We wondered from where it was coming. We
went out in the courtyard. The smoke was coming out of the nearby
house. The house had caught fire. The neighbour was crying loudly
for help. He began to take out costly things. The people came
quickly for help. Some helped him in bringing out the things from
the house, while others ran to a nearby well for water. There were
only three buckets in the house. They cried for more buckets.
Some brought four more. Others only kept weeping in pain. The
neighbours were nervous and they lost presence of mind. They did
not know what to save and what to leave behind. There was more
noise and less work. People were running over the roof and
pouring water with buckets. Neighbor's young boy Raju was also
pouring water to extinguish fire. He worked very hard to put out fire.
He ran with the buckets over the roof of the kitchen. Suddenly the
roof fell down and he fell over the head with of burning wood. We
saw him in the flames. We acted quickly and took him out of the
25
burning home. In the meanwhile somebody had the good sense to
inform the fire station. The fire engines soon arrived at the site of
the fire. The firemen immediately set to the work of fire fighting.
They did their best to control and extinguish the fire. They pumped
fast the water in the flames, with their hoses. It took almost two and
a half hours to control and then finally to extinguish fire. They
struggled hard and bravely. One of the firemen was seriously
injured in the efforts, and a few of them had received burns and
bruises. Most of the fire accidents occur because of our
carelessness. Every year there are many fire accidents, resulting in
a great loss of property and life. Many of these can be easily
avoided if we are more careful, and observe certain rules and
regulations fire protection, etc.
