Bruner's Discovery Learning Insights

1. Bruner's discovery learning theory proposes that students construct their own knowledge through organizing and categorizing information discovered themselves rather than being told by teachers. 2. According to Bruner, the role of teachers is to facilitate discovery by providing necessary information and designing lessons that allow students to discover relationships, while not organizing the information for students. 3. Bruner believed learning should develop autonomous, lifelong learners through a spiral curriculum that revisits topics with increasing complexity, allowing students to build on their existing knowledge.

Demerits of Bruner's Theory

1. Increase cognitive overload due to loads of information
2. We can not use discovery learning method for al the subjects.
3. This method is too time consuming.
4. Spiral curriculum is kind of traditional curriculum and if somebody already
know basic things then the particular individual have to learn the concept again
and it is wastage of time.

Sometime discoverylearningisconfusing
6. It
needssolidframework of model.

Discovery learning can be defined as Inquiry-Based Learning and based on
constructivist approach (-CIT aIg5TU), it is also known as Problem Based
Approach or experiential mode of learning or learning by doing.

Bruner simply believed that learners should be active and in 1960 given the
discovery learning and said that learners' construct their own knowledge and do
this by organizing and categorizing information using a coding system.

He believed that best coding system can be developed by the students

themselves by the discovery rather than being told it by the teacher.

Role Of Teachers
The role of the teacher should be a facilitator and not to teach information by rote
learningSo a good teacher will design lessons in a way that students can discover the
relationship between information.

S o for this the teacher must give all the information needed to students but without
organizing for them and in this method spiral curriculum can aid thee process of
discovery learning.
Use of Computers
Computer software also act as scaffolding or support structure for the student to learn
and socialise
s o that they also enhances and supports their individual learning.

Merits of Bruner's Theory

1. He said that any complex thing if designed in a step wise order can be easily
learned.
2. Discovery learning helps to develop life long learning skills.
3. Spiral Curriculum is very helpful to teach complex thing in spiral manner and
student reach again to same topic with some complexity.
4. Discovery learning can be motivating, reward and punishment concept.

Bruner's Thinking
A s said by Bruner "The aim of education should be to create autonomous
learners ayT RIGTI) (learning to learn) and this learning by himself is
influenced by Piaget.

Bruner was influenced by one of the Wgotsky's fact that is scaffolding,

"Scaffolding means society or other people help to increase the cognitive skills"

Bruner was agreed with ygotsky, that language play an important role and
mediate between environmental stimuli and the individual's response.

Bruner's Cognitive Development

Jerome Bruner proposed three modes of representation in his research on the
cognitive development of children, 1966:
1. Enactive Representation (action-based, Birth to 3 years)
2. Iconic Representation (Image-based, 3 to 6)
3. Symbolic Representation (Language-based, 6 years onwards)

These modes are like Piaget's Stages.

Educational Implications of Bruner's Theory
For Bruner (1961), the purpose of education should be to facilitate (guide) the
child thinking and problem-solving skills and not to impart knowledge if children's
concept is clear they can transfer the knowledge to a range of situations.

I n 1960, The Process of Education was published and as per this the students are
active learners who construct their ow knowledge.
Educational content should be provided in step wise manner.

Teacher should provide feedback and reward or punishment.

Teacher should revise the topic or content.
