Combined Gas Laws
The combined gas law combines the three gas laws: Boyle’s Law, Charles’ Law and Gay-Lussacs
Law. It states that for a given mass of gas, the volume is inversely proportional to the pressure and
directly proportional to the absolute temperature.
Gas Laws working formula:
Boyle’s Law Charles’ Law Gay-Lussac’s Law
V1 P1 = V2 P2 V1 = V2 P1 = P2
T1 T2 T1 T2

Combined Gas Laws: P1 V1 = P 2 V2

T1 T2

EXAMPLE:
The oxygen tank manufacturer used to produce 5.0 L oxygen tanks at 2000 psi 25 oC. Statistics suggests
that the 3.0 L oxygen tank at 1500 psi is more marketable. What temperature requirement is needed to produce
a 3 L oxygen tank at 1500 psi?
Given: V1 = 5.0 L Solving: P1 V1 = P2 V2
T1 = 25oC = 298 K T1 T2
P1 = 2000psi T2 = T1 P2 V2
V2 = 3.0 L P1 V1
P2 = 1500 psi T2 = (298 K) (1500 psi) (3.0 L)
Find : T2 = ? (2000 psi) (5.0 L)
Convert temperature: T2 = 1 341 000 K
K = oC + 273 10 000
K = 25 + 273 T2 = 134 K
K = 298 K
