Graham’s 5 Day Email Autoresponder

Hey friend - Graham here.

When you are creating your own 5 day email autoresponder to pitch your product to new
subscribers, feel free to use one of my most successful sequences (below) as a template or
jumping off point.

The point isn’t to copy it word for word (duh!) or to even copy the length, pacing, or style - rather
it’s to show you the overall flow of the 5 day sequence:

Day 1 - Give/Teach
Day 2 - Give/Teach
Day 3 - Teach/Pitch
Day 4 - Pitch
Day 5 - Pitch

There are a million ways to create an effective email autoresponder, this is just one.

Happy emailing!
Day 1 - Email 1 of 5 leading up to REthink Mixing promotion

Subject: Learn how to mix like the pros (my free, private gift to you)

For the next few days I want to share with you a behind the scenes look at how the top mixing
pros in the world get great mixes.

Specifically I’m going to show you how to completely change the way you mix so you get mixes
that pop with clarity and musicality, all on your current setup. No new plugins or gear needed.
Let’s get started.
Today I want to help you get better sound out of your monitors.

The first thing you have to understand about mixing is that what you hear coming out of your
speakers isn’t always the truth.

I wish this wasn’t the case, but unfortunately it is. Not because your speakers aren’t any good (it
has nothing to do with speaker design and quality).

There are two reasons:

Reason #1 - Your ROOM is lying to you. It’s changing the sound before it ever hits your ears.

By now you might already be familiar with this problem. Sound comes out of your speakers, hits
your walls, your ceiling, your floor, your desk, your bookshelves, your 1980s Rush posters (is
that just me?), and THEN bounces back into your ears.

The result?

A jumbled mess of frequencies and a blurred stereo image.

Now, you might think the solution is acoustic treatment. But you’d only be half right. Acoustic
treatment can help, it you know what you’re doing.

All too often, home studio owners do a ton of research online, buy some foam or build their own
panels, hang the up, and think they now have an acoustically treated room.

Well, by definition, they HAVE treated their room. But have they solved their problem?

Not really.
Here’s a better option. One that costs absolutely NO money and can work in ANY mixing
environment. You ready?

Turn down your speakers.

Yep. Simply turn down your monitors from either your audio interface or the actual back of the
speakers.

Why does this work? Because the less sound you blast out of your speakers, the less sound is
bouncing around in your room. And the less sound bouncing around your room, the more your
ears will be able to hear how your mix ACTUALLY sounds coming out of your speakers (as
opposed to off your walls).

But there’s another (and maybe more powerful) reason that you can’t trust what you hear
coming out of your monitors:

Reason #2 - Your EARS are lying to you. They change the perceived sound when listening to
sources at loud volumes.

Bummer right?

Science tells us that the louder a sound (your music blasting out of your speakers), the more
bass and treble response our ears perceive.

We know this instinctively because when we really want to jam out to a song, we turn it up.
Things sound bigger and badder when they are loud.

“Why is this a problem, Graham?”

Because if you have your mix cranked (even a tiny bit), you’ll think there is more bass and top
end information in the mix than there actually is.

Consequently you won’t make proper EQ decisions (i.e. you wont turn up the bass enough, and
you won’t bring enough sizzle or bite to the guitars or drums).

Then you take the mix out to your car (or anywhere else for that matter) and you’ll notice
something strange: your mix sounds dull and lacks enough bottom end.

It sounded “great” in your room because you had the speakers up too loud. But the actual mix
didn’t sound that way. Just to your ears, in that room.

Can you see how important it is to simply turn down your speakers when you mix? It affects
both your ears AND your room.
So the big question you might be asking is: “How quiet should my monitors be when I mix?”

My simple rule of thumb is to turn the speakers down to the point where you can still hear them
and mix, but could have a conversation with someone sitting next to you and a normal speaking
level. You shouldn’t have to raise your voice at all.

I stole that idea from Chris Lord Alge and it’s worked WONDERS for my mixes. I know it will for
you too.

Action Step: Today I want you to open up a recent mix in your DAW, get to a rocking part of the
song, and then slowly turn down the monitors to that comfortable speaking level. Take note of
where your volume knob is on the interface. This is probably your starting point for every other
mix from here on out.

That’s all for now!

Day 2 - Email 2 of 5 leading up to REthink Mixing promotion

Subject: I foolishly ignored this golden nugget of mixing wisdom for years

When I was in college studying audio engineering and pouring over long boring mixing text
books, I kept hearing a piece of advice from both professors and authors that just sounded so
pointless to me.

Tell me if you’ve heard this before: you should mix in mono.

“What?! Why would I want to mix in mono if my mix is going to be in stereo? And who listens to
mixes in mono anymore anyways? This isn’t the 1950s!”

It never made any sense to me. And no one really seemed to explain it in a way that I could
understand.

Maybe I was just naive, or maybe I was just to prideful to get it, but I foolishly ignored this
suggestion for a few years.

In fact, it wasn’t until I had actually started The Recording Revolution years ago that I began to
use this mixing hack.

I was reading a great book by an award winning mixer from Nashville named Kevin Ward (he’s a
good friend of mine too) and he brought up the concept of mixing in mono in one of his
chapters.
“Oh boy, not again!” I thought.

But the way he explained mixing in mono in those few pages changed EVERYTHING about
how I mix. It was like a light bulb went on in an otherwise very dark house.

Since learning and implementing this technique in countless mixes over the next few years, I
have come to think of mixing in mono as one the most powerful mixing hacks around.

It’s so simple, but let me explain it to you.

Once you’ve got a rough “gut mix” going for your song, and you’re thinking it’s time to bust out
some EQ or compression, stop. Put your entire mix into mono.

You can do this with a plugin or you could simply take the pan sliders/pots on your master fader
and put them both up the middle. Now your mix will sound like it’s coming out of your computer
screen in front of you.

Now you can start using EQ and compression.

What you’ll instantly notice is how hard it is to hear things. Guitars will be covering up other
guitars. Vocals will all mesh together. It will be frustrating and painful.

That’s the point!

It’s WAY too easy to mix in stereo. So easy in fact, that it leads you to not EQ properly.

You see when your tracks have no stereo separation, you are forced to EQ them in such a way
that you can actually hear them, even when each track is right on top of the other.

And ultimately THAT is the point of EQ. To get separation and clarity in your tracks, no matter
how they are panned.

So mixing in mono FORCES you to make the right EQ decisions, great. But who really cares if
ultimately you’re going to pop it back to stereo and people will hear it with plenty of stereo
separation?

The truth is, they won’t.

You see, most of the time people listening to your mixes won’t be some idyllic studio sweet spot
between two speakers. Sure plenty of people will listen in headphones, but most won’t.
Think about it. When you listen to a song in the car, you’re never in the sweet spot. When you
listen to music out of a stereo in your kitchen, you’re never in the sweet spot. Rather by the time
the left and the right speakers sounds reach your ears, they are collapsed into one big mono
mix.

Interesting.

So the only real way to get separation is through EQ. Panning is just gravy on top.

And the best way to get the right EQ moves for your tracks, is to force yourself to mix in mono.

It sounds crazy, but it works. I do it each and every mix. And you should too.

Action Step: Pull up an old mix, make a copy of the session, take out all of your plugins and
start from scratch. This time, put your mix in mono and get your EQ in place. Once you pop it
back out to stereo see how much more clarity you get.

That’s all for today!

Day 3 - Email 3 of 5 leading up to REthink Mixing promotion

Subject: The two must-have plugins every mixer should own

Students ask me constantly about what plugins they absolutely need in their arsenal in order to
get pro results when they mix.

Do you know what I tell them? There are only two. And you already own them.

When you break mixing down to it’s core you have only three things you need to tweak: volume,
frequency, and dynamics.

Volume is simple. Use your faders. That leaves the frequency and dynamics. Can you guess
what two plugins control these?

Correct! EQ and compression.

That’s ALL you need to get a great mix. A simple EQ and compressor plugin are your only two
“must-haves” in a mix. And when you get really good at them, your mixes reflect that.

But if it were that simple, everyone would just churn out great mixes, right? I mean every DAW
ships with at least one EQ and one compressor, sometimes more.
So if mixing is just about volume, frequency, and dynamics, then why do so many home studio
mixes sound lame?

Because most people don’t have a system: a mixing plan.

Announcing my exclusive REthink Mixing video course.

I already know that you have all the gear you need to churn out a great mix. But what most of
you don’t have is a step by step, proven plan to succeed. Today I’m offering you that plan.

Day 4 - Email 4 of 5 leading up to REthink Mixing promotion

Subject: All I had were a bunch of random mixing tips

If you’re at all like me, when I started mixing I had tips. Lots of them.

Fragments of the process of mixing. I would read a blog post here, watch a tutorial video there,
read a good article about mixing in one magazine, and then hear some more tips from other
mixers I knew and respected.

But what I didn’t have for years was a step by step system. A blueprint, if you will, for how to use
those tips in the right way.
All I wanted was for someone to sit me down, take my by the hand, and SHOW me step by step
how to think about mixing from raw tracks to final master.

Unfortunately for me, I had to develop a workflow on my own. Cobbled together from over 15
years of experimenting, schooling, book reading, and video watching.

The good news for YOU though, is that you can skip all of that pain and frustration by taking my
REthink Mixing video course.

REthink Mixing is my flagship mix training. It’s the way I would teach you if you came over to my
house for an afternoon and I trained you one on one.

I literally take a real session of raw tracks (recorded in some dude’s basement mind you, not
some pro studio) and show you how I mix from start to finish.
I show you EVERYTHING.

You will literally see each move, plugin setting, and strategy along the way. I don’t skip a thing
or do any mixing “off camera”. I put it all out there for you to see and learn from.

If you’ve ever wanted someone to give you step by step instruction for how to best mix your
material, this is it.

Listen to what one of my students, Todd, said after taking REthink Mixing:

Up until now I’ve felt like I had a handle on lots of mixing techniques but have always been a
little bit mystified by the bigger picture of using them to make a mix work. I just can’t wait to start
out on a new track now because I feel like you’ve connected the dots! - Todd S

That’s what REthink Mixing will do for you: connect the dots.

You’ll be able to take all of that information you’ve logged over the years and put it to good use
inside a proven system for churning out pro mixes.

Don’t waste another mix without knowing this step by step plan. Start watching REthink Mixing
today!

Subject: Better mixes, same plugins

Hopefully by now you know how much I hate when people say things like “You can’t get a great
mix with stock plugins.” or “Your mixes won’t sound pro until you pick up the latest XYZ Golden
bundle...”

Why does it bother me so much?

Because it’s a complete lie and it discourages otherwise talented mixers from ever getting better
at their craft.

I’m on a mission to help people make better music now, with the gear they already have! And
that means no more plugins needed!

Oh sure, you can go buy some if you want, but you don’t need them. Not to get a pro mix
anyways.

This is a huge reason why I created the REthink Mixing course. The method (and my students’
results) is proof that you can get better mixes with your current plugins.

Why? Because your mix isn’t riding on your plugins, it’s riding on YOU!

You can buy new plugins all day long, but until YOU actually get good at mixing, your mixes
won’t get any better.

REthink Mixing will change that for you. It’s a proven plan that shows you step by step from
beginning to end how to craft a mix that’s clear, punchy, musical, and radio ready.

All with stock plugins!

If you can’t tell by now, I’m pretty passionate about this stuff. I’ve seen students make
breakthroughs and take their mixes to entirely new levels of awesomeness when they get this
material and begin to put it into action.

Take Toby for example:

My mixes were so thin and I seemed to be chasing my tail trying to cut harshness in my mix.
After going through REthink Mixing they’re sounding great now. I actually didn’t think I could get
a mix this good in my room with my gear. Now my pre-mixes sound better than my old finished
mixes. - Toby B

Or Jorge:

I recently purchased and watched your REthink Mixing series and it has improved my studio
mixing — and my live mixing, believe it or not — 10 fold. - Jorge B
Can you imaging pumping out mixes that sound 10x better than your current mixes? All without
having to buy another piece of gear or plugin?

That’s what REthink Mixing is all about. It’s for real. It’s simple. It’s proven.

And it’s totally risk free. If the material doesn’t take your mixes up to an entirely new level, then
email me and I’ll refund you 100%. You have nothing to lose (except of course the way you
used to mix).
